I've been out a few evenings recently working on a swing change from a recent lesson and also on my horrific short game. I've had a terrible short game for ages and it has been holding me back - duffed chips, bladed chips, everything but well-executed chips. As soon as I missed a green I'd be staring at a double bogey. I figured it might help to develop a routine in the hope that it would take my mind out of the process, so I copied the one I use for putting and worked on it a bit. Seemed to be holding up well in practice but as we all know, there's no real pressure there.
Took a flier from work today to try and get a game in the Wednesday medal. Managed to hook up with another solo guy and we were the last two out. Birdied the 1st after a bit of a hooky tee shot and thought I might be onto something good. Then bogeyed the next two to teach me not to get ahead of myself.
All the way round, I hit it pretty average. No great length off the tee, not hitting the irons particularly well, but the short game was a revelation (for me). No duffs, no bladed ones, and I even managed three up-and-downs
It all added up to 76 (SSS 70), so should get me a 0.4 cut and sitting on the threshold of 7. Hopefully the short game is here to stay because if I can get this swing change sorted and get the ball striking back, then there could be good things on the horizon for my game. If anyone is struggling with their short game, I can recommend trying to implement some kind of routine. Just try and keep it on the short side
Also worth mentioning an incident at the par 3 9th. Got to the top of my backswing and a pheasant hiding in the rough about 5yds away let out an almighty squawk. Cue a massive chunk which propelled my ball forward about 30yds and into a ditch. Decided to play a provisional and stuck it 6 inches. I didn't want to look for the first ball but as we walked past the ditch, you couldn't help but see it sitting there among the nettles. Managed to hack it out to the front edge and then lipped out for the par. So it was 4 either way but it might have been a 2 if it hadn't been for the bloody pheasant!
