Right I am braced to take a whole heap of stick on this but wanted to share anyway. I'd been struggling with my partial wedge shots for a while, either chipping around the green or less than full swing pitches. I had project x5.5 shafts in my old wedges to match my irons. Over Christmas I got three new wedges (and thanks to some great advice from Ethan) ended up getting them with KBS wedge flex shafts in them.

I reported at the time that they made a big difference and received a fair smattering of interest as well as scepticism.

Well having just signed up for a series of short game lessons I had my first one on pitching on Saturday. Went out to practice on Tuesday lunchtime using my old wedge with the PX shaft. (Why you ask? well I had intended to use my old clubs for practice) Anyway it was a disaster.

Went out today armed with both my old wedge and a new wedge. Old wedge with Project X shaft shocking. New wedge with same swing superb. It's not scientific but for me there is a clear difference in performance and real benefit for my game.

Just thought I'd share... (runs for cover!)
 
why run for cover? the shaft plays a MAJOR part in the formula, the old shaft wasnt suited to you, the new one is, glad you've found YOUR shaft.
 
I'm not sure it would make any diff.

I have 3 wedges in my bag;

PW MP62 is DG s300
51 deg MPT DG r300
56 deg MP 10 Wedge flex

I hit them all fine, and 3 diff shafts. When i shank one its not the shfts:) fault
 
I think the shaft thing for high handicappers is rubbish. Surely it makes more sense to have as much help as you can in a shaft. Where as a low handicapper should be able to cope with any shaft and make it work.

Mmm would be interested if they were the same as my old SW had an s300 shaft in it a feels diff to the wedge flex.

Mind you I'm using a set of old MP32 with reg shafts for winter and hit them fine, just go a bit higher and a bit more forgiving when you thin one when its -6 :(
 
I have the TaylorMade XFT wedges which have the KBS wedge flex shafts fitted as standard. The shafts are very stiff to give more accuracy and feel. My irons have Dynamic Gold XP R300 shafts however when I bought the dedicated AW I opted for the stiff shafted version rather than regular so that it gave similar feel to the KBS shafts in my 56 and 60 degree wedges.

The KBS wedge shaft is slightly stiffer than the stiff dynamic gold XP however I'd rather have the feel and accuracy of the stiffer shaft around the greens
 
Tiger, what benefit are you getting specifically? more spin?


what are the PX 5.5 not doing? less spin, too stiff for shots shots?

On pitches the KBS are giving me more control and tighter dispersion. But the thing is they feel smoother than the Project X's. It's hard to describe but I'm working on Pelz type pitching with my pro and she's got me doing 9 o'clock swings. With the Project X's they just feel really stiff and unresponsive, like a broom handle, on those types of shots where the KBS feel a lot softer and whippy than they actually are. The same can be said for chips around the green.

On full shots both shafts are great and the PX's fly a little lower and longer but the difference I'm noticing is anything less than a full shot.

Very interesting. It would be cool if you had a set of wedge flex too, wana pop out and get some so we have a full set of data?:D

I guess the tip in the KBS is softer as they are designed to add extra spin but I am sure Shaft can confirm or deny that.

LMAO!!! I have tried a DG wedge flex before and while I like the DGs on shorter partial shots on full shots I just hit them ridiculously high and am not a big fan. The KBS is happy middle ground for me :)

That said, while kit is important, my technique has needed work as well!
 
When I had my Titleist fitting they fitted my wedges in the same shaft, but with a regular flex. He did explain, but my old age meant that I forgot most of it :rolleyes:

KBS is a very nice shaft designed to give a nice mid launch but flattish flight with good feel. I prefer it to PX too.

have used the tt spinner shafts shaft (ethan) and does it give more spin
 
The shaft is the engine of the club, try putting a fiesta 1.1 engine in a ferrari and see if you get the performance you expect.
 
Golf World has a report on the latest wedges on the market this month including a new offering from TM. I actually think its a good idea to get shafts you are happier with. Wedge play requires a lot of committment to the shots. If you are over the ball worried about the shaft your never going to give it that full commit into the ball
