Wedge finishes...

i disagree, rusty oil cans give you more spin and control.

I've had the Oil Can or trusty rusty Vokey for a couple of years and to be honest unless you let it get into a real state I don't think it works. The trouble is after each shot you clean the mud off the face, which in turn dries it therefor you don't get a lot of rust. I leave my clubs in the car as well and it still doesn't get that rusty. It might be ok for the first couple of shots in a round of golf but after you have hit a couple of balls the rust grip has gone.

If I was to buy again it would be the spin milled version, I think this is in the satin crome. I have practiced with these and IMO they create more spin than the Oil Can.

This is spin milled, AND oil can finish.

I hope I'm allowed to link the online shop- for £67 including free delivery I thought it was a good source to share with the forum...

Well there ya go.........didn't know you could get a combination of the two.

What is rust? It is oxidation of the surface. Yes, it might cause micro pitting of the surface, but this is nothing compared to the rough surface generated by machining. If the face goes rusty, it is going to start to blunt the sharp edges of the grooves. These grip the ball far more than the rust will. Sharp grooves shred balls, we have all seen it. Two things will blunt the grooves, hitting out of sand (very abrasive), and rust. If you left your wedge to rust indefinately, it would disappear completely, given time. Why would this cause more spin?. Rust is also a loose powder, so you are effectively lubricating your wedge with a dry lubricant.

Rust is an anti glare finish, that is all. It doesn't add spin.

If you rust up your wedge (try putting the head in salt water for a week or two, I have done this), the rust on the face lasts about two swings, before the face is back to raw steel. It isn't going to add spin. It is an urban myth, with no scientific base.

Cheers murph.

I admit I have had rusty wedges and always struggled for spin.

I went out with my new Mizzy wedges yesterday and on quite firm greens I was stopping the ball dead. They were only firm because it was so cold so I thought I would struggle to hold a green(skidding off) but the mizzies performed fantasticly. Better than any of the Vokeys I have used. They also get through the turf effotlessly and that is important to me, because if I go too deep, I often loose distance.

Well found Murph.

I've never liked the look of a rusty wedge and these days the Satin or Black Nickel finishes look better and keep the groove definition for longer.

It arrived today and is absolutley gorgeous.
Off for a round on my Tod tomorrow morning where I'll get to try it out along with my new 5 wood. :)

There is a pod cast on the sand trap today with an interview (among others) with Bob Vokey, in which he agrees that a rusty finish does not add spin, but may change the feel of a wedge, but this alone is hard to quantify. He also goes on to talk about the new spin milled range, but gets a bit anal on sole grinds.

If BV doesn't think a rusty wedge adds spin, then I will go with him on that one. He has way more data than me.
