Hi chaps- just a quickie, but would the finish of a wedge make a difference to how it plays? I'm looking at a Titleist Vokey and am seeing it in chrome, oil can, and matt black finishes.
Thanks in advance!

I've not used all the different sorts but I'm sure I read somewhere that black finish gets more spin? I bought black ones!

i disagree, rusty oil cans give you more spin and control.

Fair point, although I don't see many top pros using rusty wedges. The first time a tried one, a mate was selling one, it left a bad mark on the ball that would not come off and he got it back toot sweet. I would challenge any top class player to demonstrate a measurable difference.

It is claimed because of the rough finish the rust has, it creates more friction between the club and ball, grips it better and spins it more. I doubt pro's need the extra help.

When I was buying my wedges the pro said that the carbon nickel helped spin the ball more than the standard, I mainly chose the carbon nickel to prevent glair on sunny days.

I have to say I'm not overly bothered by the finish but the shape has to be right for me. I love the way the TM TP wedges (especially the 52) sit behind the ball. I always feel confident with these in my hands

I not sure rusty wedges spin the ball more if anyone has had one before if it gets used regular the face loses its finish and turns silver,I always used dark finished wedges until my vokeys they just look tatty after 6 months as for glare using satin wedges its happened once in a year it happens far more with the putter

thanks for the replies- I just love this forum!

Ordered Oil Can finish, mainly because of the "vintage" look.
A Christmas present to myself!!!

Got to be honest, one of the reasons I swapped from Cally X wedges was the rusty finish. To my eye they look "broken". Since then I've used Black Nickel or Satin wedges - I just think they look better - and performance wise I couldn't tell the difference.

Good choice there cant go wrong with a vokey,i just got a vega 60 degree wedge which is great its has a cool FST Hi-rev shaft in,it looks and feels awesome

I have rusty vokeys !! yeah it span nice but no did my pings in a standard finsih and my mizunos in black nickel so it doesnt matter to me! Its your technique that gives you spin!

Spin is all technique, not finish related. Spin isn't something I particularly desire anyway. If you pitch it short of the pin, who wants to spin it back off the green anyway? I was quite glad when my Vokeys wore to a less agressive state, and I have now changed to something with a much gentler action.

I've had the Oil Can or trusty rusty Vokey for a couple of years and to be honest unless you let it get into a real state I don't think it works. The trouble is after each shot you clean the mud off the face, which in turn dries it therefor you don't get a lot of rust. I leave my clubs in the car as well and it still doesn't get that rusty. It might be ok for the first couple of shots in a round of golf but after you have hit a couple of balls the rust grip has gone.

If I was to buy again it would be the spin milled version, I think this is in the satin crome. I have practiced with these and IMO they create more spin than the Oil Can.

I've just put the spin milled oilcan vokey on the list for the big man in red. Tried them at AG (without the tape!!!) and it felt great. Can't really comment on spin as i was on the range but the flight was great and it felt like a club I could get really confident with and properly know my distances.

Rust actually doesn't help spin at all. It is a common misconception in golf.

People think that because the rust feels rough, it creates more friction, however rust is actually a loose surface on the club face.

Spin is created through the friction between the club face and the ball. Having a loose surface between the face and the ball reduces friction, and therefore spin.

i am not convinced by this and would need to be properly convinced.

I have a mate who is a pro and swears the rusty finish helps him spin the ball more.

This is spin milled, AND oil can finish.

I hope I'm allowed to link the online shop- for £67 including free delivery I thought it was a good source to share with the forum...
