hi all - after reading reviews etc i stumped up the cash for Titleist Vokey wedges in 56 and 60 lofts.
i really struggle with these, taking huge divets or often slicing the ball (had them for 6months)

i'm considering switching to Mizuno MX Wedges which are (apparently) designed to be more forgiving. you think this is a good idea?

They will defo be more forgiving for you, have you tried them out? I can understand you having trouble with the 60* it took me ages to learn how to play with it.

Are you coming over the top in your swing? That's one of the usual problems with not being able to hit wedges.

On a tangent here, please dont take offence, why do you play V1s when you are a "Novice! working on that handicap" what scores are you shooting? I reckon there are much better balls for you.

I think you should put the 60 degree one down until you have mastered the 56, then go back to the lob wedge once the confidence is up.

I would advise taking the hit and having a lesson with your pro on wedge play before you pay out to change your wedges. Any problems you have with the vokey you will probably take with you to the mizuno wedges but to a slightly lesser degree.

Keep practicing and it'll come!

no i haven't tried them out, and to be honest i don't have a problem with my wedges off the matts in the range so don't think i'll be able to suss them until i get on the grass.

balls - yeah that was pointed out to me yesterday so ordered some Nike Juice and Srixon distance balls. i assume the softer the ball the better it would be for me!

scoring wise i usually break 100, shooting around 90-95 on average i guess.

i have a lesson booked for tonight so will mention to him. although (as with most clubs) i don't usually have a problem off the matts, just off the grass.

i can't hit out of a bunker for the life of me

Most pros are happy to do a playing lesson. Work on shots on the course, where you struggle. Especially in bunker play.

Its so easy to say aim under, or behind the ball... open the club face, open your stance do this, do that! The only really advise is get some sound advice and practice, and most of us don't have the luxery or having bunkers to practice in!

yeah that could be a plan. have a round booked for tomorrow where i'm meant to be playing on my own - they do have a practice hole there with a bunker. maybe could convince him (cash!) to come down with me for a bit.

i know what i'm meant to do - but doing it is another matter! :)

If you are taking massive divots, you may find you bought wedges with too little bounce for your swing. Ask your pro to look at your wedges, and then your technique, and he should be able to set you straight. The vokeys come in a variety of bounce angles, and you should match these to your style of play, and course condition.

i find i often let them twist in my hands for some reason so i tend to close the face (facing to the right almost) which helps. bounce wise good shout, will ask him.

I've got a 56° one of these, virtually brand new. Got it when i got a new set of irons. You can have it for £20 if you want. That way you can try it out & then go & buy the 60° if you get on with it.

I personally don't like the feel of it. I'll stick a pic up,let me know if you fancy it.

I have a couple of Vokey's, 54 with 8Bounce & 60 degree with 4, only got them a few months ago.

To be honest, even as a 11 handcapper, they need work to master them, so I can well see why you have trouble perhaps.

I have always carried a Zing2 Lob Wedge, which I could slide under a ball on a fluffy lie to float it up over trouble onto a green, but I rarely used it off a tight lie.
The Vokeys are going to get way more practice, to master them hopefully off any lie, as a key to lower scores perhaps, but its a craft that takes patience I think.

Before you discard them in the hope that mizuno's will be different, I'd see what the lessons tell you, I think the problem lies more with your swing/technique than the Wedges .

Good luck.

I think a major cause of your problems in hitting it so fat is a common one in that you are trying to be too precise and therefore de-accelerate through impact. This may lead to you collapsing your body height leading to uneven impact (one good strike and then a poor one with a similar feeling swing).

If you are not hitting any other shots heavy I'm guessing you are not hitting through properly. With a full shot you are committed to a full and powerful turn and release and thereofre don't have time to adjust. With your wedges and particularly shots which don't need a full swing (30-60 yards) you sound like you may be swinging too far back and then not hitting thorugh the ball at impact.

My advice would be to try and get use to swinging at 7 o'clock (around just below knee height) 9 o'clock (waist high) and 10 o'clock (just short of shoulder) and get use to how far you hit all your wedges with these swings. That way if you have say a 25 yard shot depending on how you want to play it, you can hit a 9 o'clock LW or a 7 o'clock 56.

I'd get your pro to check your swing but I'm pretty certain he'll say the swing is too long and there is not enough committment through impact. To be honest I wouldn't think about changing your wedges until you have sorted the problem out as it will re-occur whatever make you have.

Maybe the shafts are too long and you need to get them cut down a bit (measure the thickness of the divot and that's how much you need to cut off) - with a shorter shaft then the head will hit the ball perfectly.....
