Wedge advice

Considering i played with 2 wedges in my bag (pw&sw) until i reached 14hcp then added (AW), I think there is too much about wedges for mid-high hcps, and as of yet i do not think i have hit my aw or sw with a full swing the aw was more for 20-50 yard shots, where i have just recently started using the sw outside a bunker.

All 4 of my wedges get used every round of golf without fail. 65% of golf is played within 100 yards so you need to have the correct tools in my opinion. Id rather have wedges than big bats.

Agree ,but i could use my pw for a 100yd shot 80-70-40-or 20 yard my point is you dont need to hit the club full swing.
^^^^^^^ Artist ;) I think there is too much made of this high and mid h'cap issue. My problem is off the tee. The closer I get to the hole the more my confidence grows (except in the sand :() I only hit my PW full swing but hit all of them with partial swings. Whatever you decide I hope it works out well for you Swanny :)

Remember that it's Distance Gaps that is the important thing to get right (for the Scientist approach) rather than having consistent loft gaps. And it's unlikely you are ever hitting a full shot with wedges off the fairway. While that gap does seem quite large, it could actually be more versatile. The difference in difference between my (48*) PW and my 52* GW is pretty small really. These days, I tend to use them for different purposes rather than specific distances.

BTW. The Magpie approach is 'borrow a mate's one and never return it'!

I agree with Tiger,my wedge play has always been good as I started playing golf on putting greens, chip and putts, and small par 3 courses.I also tend to struggle more with the longer clubs.Having a good few wedges gives me the confidence to deal with any situation or lie when near the green and helps me score better when I suffer off the tee.I shot my best round in ages last Monday with only a SW in the bag do I can see where both camps are coming from.

There are some on here like bob who are magicians with a wedge in hand

Not so, sadly.
Having said that, I'm not bad but can still hit the odd duff.
The difference is probably I grew up learning my golf when you only had 2 wedges. You had to learn the skill of hitting them different distances and heights.
Then along came the marketing people and bingo......all change.
'Can't hit your wedges close?, then buy our new wedges that will do it for you'

I understand people don't have time to practice any more so why not buy a LW that will hit the high shot for you.
and get the GW to save you learning the half shot? After all, who wants to learn how to hit a 5 wood or a 2 iron.

Just one question.....
In todays lifestyle, we have every time saving device going. So why do we have less time to practice now than we did 30 years ago ?

In your defence Bob you don't get much time to practice your short game because you hit GIR so consistently ;) I see what you are saying but I just find grooving one technique and changing the club so much easier and surely the 'selling us distance' through strengthening lofts is the problem as my PW is closer to a traditional 9 iron. So really it's only the lob wedge that's the difference...

No problem with that Tiger.
It's that some people would rather buy extra wedges rather than learn how to hit the high shot, of the knock down shot.
I did see one guy who had similar to you, a 44 deg PW so a GW and a SW, (no problems so far) but he had 2 LWs, both 60 deg but with different bounces

I would like to take the opportunity to say that I know both the flop and knock down shot. My short game is generally my strong point.

Agree with all this, I've just traded my vokey 52* back to the pro, will stick with 48*pw and 56*sw........like I grew up with

Er. Phil Mickelson certainly has 2 LWs, admittedly different lofts (60, 64), but his logic is the same. Decide which one to use depending on the shot required. 60 has 10* bounce - for soft sand/rough/spongy ground and 64 has 6, perfect for sliding the leading edge under the ball from tight firm lies.

And he's certainly a magician with a wedge!

You could really call the 'extra' wedge a 'labour saving device'!

I'd be looking 50* and 56* and that's all

+1 for this

As Bob tells us, learn to hit the 2/3 and 1/2 shots or pitch well. I can get my 52* up and stopping like I used to do with a 60* all through improved technique. I have now dropped the 60 in favour of a 3 wood, big difference to my game!
