Okay guys so its the middle of july and my eyes are running over waterproof suits

i have the chance of a galvin green Anton jacket for £135 brand spanking new, anybody have one?? is it good?? how does it compare to the "heavier" of the jackets in the range, just trying to work out whether or not to get this or get one of the heavier duty ones

opinions please

Buy it, it's a galvin at a good price. Folk will come on and tell you that it is overpriced rubbish, I would never use anything else after owning it.

I prefer Proquip myself but that's just my personal preferance.

If it was good enough for the 2010 Ryder cup team, I suppose it's good enough for me :D

well I was offering an alternative, I have read a few complaints about GG stuff.

If he wants the GG and its a bargain (are any of the GG gear bargains... hmmm) then go for it :)

(is that a better reply Sir)

pqlite by proquip... excellent, very light, fits very nicely (for me) and can be picked up for a bargain

That help with the decision to buy a cheap gg jacket

Like so many things in golf, it's a personal preferance.

I can't justify spending £200+ on a waterproof jacket and another £150+ on the trousers, when there is a quality alternative can do the same job for a fraction the price?

I have GG waterproofs and have no complaints. They are excellent. I don't know anyone who has got them that isn't happy with them.

Conversely, it seems like quite a few people who don't own them think that they are overpriced, which they are of course, not better than many other brands and poor value for money. I don't agree with the latter two points though. I think that the maxim of "buy cheap, buy twice" holds true for GG stuff. They are certainly the nicest waterproofs I have ever had and I have owned most of the big names in the past.

I use my goretex ProQuip jacket for mountain biking these days and it is pretty good, but GG is better in my view.

Plus, it is the coolest brand which counts for some people, me included I am ashamed to say! :o

Well said, that man.

You cant be that interested in 'cool' brands though as I see you have some Ping clubs :D

You are quite right of course. I am planning to change my driver and possibly my irons soon. It is difficult to find cool brand clubs I like unfortunately.

I quite like Ping but their irons have no feel. Good woods though.

I don't like Callaway as a brand particularly but their clubs seem to suit me.

Taylor Made seem to bring out a new club every week and I can never keep track. I might get a white driver though.

Mizuno are in my view just nasty Japanese fanboy tat and I wouldn't want anything that everyone else seems to think is so marvellous.

I would not play anything made by Nike, not even if someone paid me to.

Yonex are for people with biceps like knots in cotton.

Cleveland are okay.

Never tried Srixon.

McGregor seem nice but are a bit "moms apple pie" for me. Plus I only want to buy 2nd hand so will be hard to find.

Looks like I need to go with Titleist then. :D What a shame that Apple don't make golf gear.....

In reality though, I probably shan't change anything.

And of course, I don't really think the above before any of the Mizuno lovers take out a fatwa. :D

And apologies for hijacking this thread... :o

It's hardly personal preference if you can't justify spending the money, surely preference only comes into play when you have tried both and decided?

I was out in the rain all day Saturday and GG covered from head to ankle and FJ (another issue of mine) below that. I was wet everywhere ( except upper thighs to be honest) but the kit I had on was light (GG Paclite Gortex)and layers beneath that moisture repellent (and again lightweight) from the body and there isnt anything in the market that would have done better in those conditions. Having spent many years trialling Gortex kit in the Army and more importantly on the golf course suggests we should think about the weight of the kit and then the water repellent qualities and you wont go far wrong. However when it hacks it down full on for 4 hours your going to get wet. GG do a pretty good job to cover these issues off IMO. So if your bargain jacket is lightweight then run with it. P.s I have however now got bloody webbed feet thanks to FJ!!

Of course It's a preferance. "If" I had a budget of, for arguments sake £300 to get kitted out, why pay over the odds just for a brand name?

Persoanlly I'd "prefer" to buy a quality alternative, that comes with a 3 year waterproof guarantee (Proquip) and spend the difference on lessons, but thats just my preferance. Other may happily spend that budget on, what are, quality garments. That is their choice (preferance).

I do see your point in justifying spend, and it's a good and valid point.
