A thought struck me over the weekend as I checked our clubs website to see that the course was closed AGAIN. Why, when we can pipe oil and gas across continents, aren't we piping our one HIGHLY PRECIOUS ABUNDANT resource over to where is required? Please don't say cost, when our clowns in government are discussing how to build a railway line to the hell hole of the country, or is it a way to get out, hmm maybe. Anyway, we, and Ireland because it's green there for a reason, could build a mahoosive reservoir and send our precious water the the countries that are in desperate need of it. Hey, we could even charge them for the stuff.

I believe we already do, theres a huge reservoir up north that pipes and ships water all over the place, I read about it in some length years ago in a broad sheet, I found it funny at the time as parts of the country was on a hose pipe ban and we were selling and shipping water elsewhere!

I thought we shipped water by tanker when necessary. Not aware of a genuine pipe scheme across the country.

I know you don't want to hear it but to set up a pipe system to move water really is not worth the money. If it was then people would have done it. Cheaper to adapt agriculture, water usage, build desalination plants in really tough areas that are coastal and then pipe within their own locality. Sorry.

One of the problems with transporting water is that it is quite heavy and non-compressible, unlike electricity and gas. Also if it has to go uphill, it has to be pumped. Something like the Élan Valley scheme would cost £billions in today's money!

Around a decade ago there was talk of piping water from the North to the South as the South was suffering from severe drought and rivers were drying up. We seem to have more of it than we know what to do with now!

Given the vast quantity of companies selling water aroun the country in bottled form, I think the practically 'best' solution has already been found!

As noted in the article Fish posted, piping or shipping Water isn't economically viable - currently - because the cost of the 'raw material' isn't high enough for the Capital/Transport cost to be 'absorbed'.

This so far very wet winter may be a one off occurrence though, due the random nature of water. We have been very close to the North Atlantic jet stream for several weeks now, along which storms tend to travel. In another year it could stay well to the North of us and we would get very little rain. :mmm:

Sorry, that should have read "due to the random nature of weather."

Reminds of the story of a man who sent the following email to his neighbour:

"I'm terribly sorry, but I have been using your wife for the last two years. I have stopped doing this now and do hope you will be able to forgive me. Yours ...."

The neighbour is so annoyed with his wife for being unfaithful that he shoots her dead.

Then another email arrives "Sorry, I meant wi-fi. Damn predictive text!".

Sad to announce that the man who invented predictive text has passed away today. His funfair will be held at 12 moon next monkey
