Washing waterproofs

My nike waterproof trousers are literally brown from the knee down (Think its my trolley spraying up mud in these conditions) .....

I am sure I read somewhere that the washing machine takes the waterproofing out of the material..... Can anyone suggest?

Depends on what material it is - gortex can be washed in a machine

I use nikwax Tech wash 1st then on a 2nd cycle with nikwax TX direct. do it once a year cost about a tenner for the twin pack and I get 3 treatments out of it so not bad.

Same here. Just remember to rinse out the drawer and running a quick cycle empty prior to doing your waterproofs doesn't hurt just to clear all soap from the machine and get the best results.

Crikey you must get a fair speed up. I am not keen on washing my waterproofs, so either brush them down when dry, or just wait for the next downpour to clean them. I also try and get the worst of the mud off with the air shoe cleaners at my club.

I managed to machine wash my waterproofs last week after I slipped walking down a muddy bank and went base over apex, covering myself with wet mud in the process. Yuk! They came out fine. I read the label and it said machine wash at 40°C, don't tumble dry and cool iron, which as I hung them up to dry, didn't prove necessary. Played in the rain once since and they were still waterproof.

I was always informed not to use a softener when washing waterproof or rain, splash (IP) proof garments, so I never have but do use a normal washing powder and all my items are still as good as new.

This is probably the best thing you can do, graingers also do their own version which is as good. Also make sure you rinse them off and if need be use a soft brush with warm water. With a lot of modern waterproofs in addition to the membrane (gore-tex or equivilant) the have a water resistant finsh on the outer msterial and this is often refreshed with a cool iron or low temp tumble dry. Check the wash instructions and follow to the letter. If you take good care you will get many years wear from them.

As a note you can shower proof fleeces and sweaters with nikwax tx-direct wash in, also good to help your brolly have a better run off of water.

I scrub the bottoms over the sink with a nail brush most days. Then every few weeks pop them in the washing machine on "rinse and fast spin" cycle - come up like new! Usually wash in a re-proof techwash type liquid at the start of winter.

Be careful some waterproofs have a very thin rubbery plastic membrane in them which can be ruined by hot water.

If I'm playing on a really boggy course and its solely to protect the trousers underneath, I have an old pair of Proquip. Not really that waterproof anymore but good enough. If I'm playing in the rain and mud I have a couple of sets of waterproofs and usually just rinse them off under a lukewarm tap, maybe with a gentle scrub with a nail brush. To be honest once they are on, I don't really care that they aren't spotless

I always used to hand wash and line dry my waterproofs, but when I bought Galvin's I noticed it recommended machine washing and tumble drying, so that's what I do. so much easier and the waterproofs are fine.

This is important.

Washing frequently with no softener apparently does them good (well, Goretex anyway) and periodically do a re-proofing wash.

Have a pair of Mizuno waterproofs, which are worn all winter to keep trousers dry and free of mud.

Will always brush the mud off when dry and then if the mud is really bad will hand wash in warm water.

Do not like to start a new round with dirty trousers and dirty shoes. Even if it is a wet period like at present. I always feel better on the 1st tee with clean clubs and clothing
