Views on advice during social comps

So i've played with just about every standard of player,in all formats of competition, but by some quirk of fate/luck,i managed to avoid the anally retentive ones, who would be petty enough to try and get me DQ'd,because i may have offered help or advice to another golfer in my fourball ?
Some rules are there to be broken. ;)
That is probably one of the strangest & discouraging posts ive read on here.. "some rules are there to be broken" sounds almost intentional.. if you know its a rule and you stil break it totaly shocks me , im sorry but it does

I have to agree. You can't pick and choose which ones to break. I'm not saint and like you have given advice before where I shouldn't and should have suffered the consequences. I didn't BUT in an official club match were I to meet one of these "anally retentive" club members and I did get pinged for it, what are the options. Turn round and say, it doesn't matter its there to be broken or its a fair cop and take it on the chin.

Ok,so lets try this scenario......
Mungo,Homer,Blade, and 4th man are playing a monthly medal,4th man blocks several shots,he shakes his head after the umteenth tee shot lands in the trees on the right,he sighs, picks his tee up,and mutters "think its time i gave up this game,i dunno what i'm doing today,i seem to be blocking everything,i may as well just go home"
As the group walk towards the tree's on the right side of the fairway,Mungo turns to 4th man and says " i wouldn't worry too much mate, its probably something simple,i do the same sometimes, its usually my alignment,or ball position"

What should Homer and Blade do next ?

Turn to you and tell you that it's a Medal, a proper qualifying competition and you're giving advice. Better stop or we'll have to call a penalty on you.

Advice like that above could be construed as against the rules, in reality it's a bit of encouragement and doesn't specifically tell Player 4 what to do (ish). I wouldn't penalise on this occasion but would advise against it again.

It's all to do with the sort of play. In competition you have to follow all the rules. End of story. If you don't then you should get penalised. If you do it deliberately then you may get called a cheat. Simples.

In a social game it doesn't matter, if there's nothing but buying the beers or a couple of quid on it then there's no issue. I bet a lot of rules get "forgotten" at times like these.

Part of the problem is that to an extent and until we are caught, we are "allowed" to pick and choose the laws/rules we abide by in everyday life.
Perfect scenario. Driving along the road in a 30 limit. How many do that? Not many at all. But how many do when there's a Police car behind them? Everybody.........
Choosing to ignore a rule when it suits - you might get away with it in everyday life but in a game like Golf, that relies on the integrity of it's players, you simply can't.

Well id go and look for my ball and if i didnt like where i was id move it coz one of the lads said some of the rules are there to be broken .. :D :D il throw it back at ya in a different way mate, il ask how many GOLFERS :D on here think "some of the rules of golf are made to be broken" ??

Sev, your a good man. I applaud you for what you did. Not many people would play a round with a 36 H/C and be as polite as you.

I guess in situations like this, its a case of knowing your audience. IF I knew the group I was playing with were serious about the comp and sticklers for rules, I'd explain politely that I couldn't offer 'advice' but help out where I could.

If i knew the group were the opposite, then of course I'd offer as much help and advice as I could.

There's no harm done, how are these people going to learn if we don't teach them. Problem for some people is that knowledge is power, and they fear people gaining power because one day, it might make it harder for them to win.

I'd imagine those concerned are not actually setting thr golfing world alight.

So,i'm a cheat then,yes or no ?
County qualifying matches are played to the book, but whenever i've played in them, there has been plenty of interaction between players in there respective groups. Are you suggesting, that there are some County Players, who are also cheats,or that even though they are plus handicappers, and represent there County, they do not know the rules of golf ?
What next, using a measuring tape to measure somebodies driver,so that the tape can be used to determine the two clublength rule, when dropping.A Forensic team to determine what caused a scrape,or to analyse droppings,in case there is a dispute over whether its a burrowing animal or not.
Your playing in a monthly medal, one of your group race's his first put 3 feet past the hole,he asks if he can "just finish this".How many of you have said "take your time mate" ? ;)

Whether we all do it, some do it, or nobody does it is irrlevent. Giving advice in "proper" round, one that affects your handicap, is against the rules. If you're playing to the rules, it's even against them if you do it in Social golf - mostly it will be overlooked in the Social as in the OP. But you can't overlook it in a Medal - like it or not and expect to get pulled up for it.
I'm not going to call you a cheat - but if you offer advice during a Medal, and you do it in the full knowledge that it's breaking a rule then you may as well kick your ball out of the rough and onto the fairway too - it amounts to the same thing. A breach of the rules and leaves you open to being called a cheat.

Choice is yours.

You know its a rule , yet you choose to break it ? think you just answered your own question .. il totaly agree we can all break rules , anyone that hasnt is lying , to PURPOSELY brake a rule to me is cheating , as per the the example you gave im sure i would have done that numerous times not on purpose tho & i didnt advise him on the putt, i posted a thread here along time ago asking , IS NOT KNOWING THE RULES CHEATING? the general consencious was if its not intentional they wouldnt class it as cheating.. i can see your point in all your posts until you posted "some rules are made to be broken" that got me that did , so il try sumise my point .. in my opinion if you intentionaly or purposely break a rule in an organised competition you are cheating other participants who are abiding by the rules . guess we will have to agree to disagree on this

I'm not intentionally breaking any rules, and never have,in fact,i consider my behaviour, etiquete, and sportsmanship during play,to be exemplary.
My point is simple, this is one of many rules, that most golfers either, don't understand,or don't really pay attention to.
The vast majority of 4 balls in competition, will have at sometime broken this rule.I for one, would most certainly not challenge somebody,or try to get them DQ'd for anything so petty. Now if they were giving somebody a golfing lesson,or reading putts for them, for example, then yes,i'd intervene and ask them to stop.
