Hi all, went to the driving range yesterday and the missus to a video of a few shots I did with my #3 hybrid at the very end.
I started playing a couple of months ago and had a lesson 3 weeks ago, he noticed I had quite a bad out to in swing which meant I sliced most shots and also hooked some way left.
Been working on my swing plane a lot but I couldn't play last week due to work commitments.
Yesterday my short irons were ok, straight with a hint of slice, the longer the club got the more I would hit it left by anything from 10 to 50 yards, not every shot but a lot more than before however I never once sliced it!
I think on the first vid you can actually see just how far the ball goes left, I uploaded the second vid as on that shot it went up in the air like a pitching wedge lol.

Anyway, please don't hold back with any comments and tips. I've noticed straight away just how short my backswing is, I almost panic when it nears the top which makes me shorten it, that's how it feels anyway.
I can also see my right leg is very straight and my left heel comes off the floor during the backswing.

Here are the clips, both are also in slo mo...

Sorry if you already know this, but I'll try to explain why the ball goes where it does.

There are 2 parts (simple version) that decide the direction the ball starts and swerves on. Where the club face is pointing, and the direction it's travelling in.

Where the club face is pointing decides (roughly speaking) the starting direction of the ball.
The direction the club head is travelling (swing path) dictates which way the ball moves in the air. If the path is to the left of the face the ball will fade/slice. If the path is to the right of the face the ball will hook/draw. If the path and face are the same the ball will go straight on the line it started on.

When the ball starts left like on your first video, that must be where the face was pointing so the first thing I would suggest looking at is your grip. Having said that though, I would have thought it would be the first thing the pro looked at as well.

Sorry if that's all stuff you knew already!

More comments would be appreciated if you have time.
Can't wait to get out to the driving range tonight, I've kinda convinced myself I must be rolling over my wrists or something on impact as implied by R3.
I have had trouble with pain in a finger on my left hand recently so I have made a concious effort to loosen my grip with that hand.
Hook shots aside, just wondering how I could tidy my swing up in general, planning more lessons in the near future but it's a matter of when I have time with me :(

i think you're swinging too much around yourself, a flat swing, which could be the cause of the hooks.

my pro taught me to try and hit key points on the back swing one of which was as the top of my back swing a straight line could be drawn from the ball through the right shoulder to my hands, your way off that, too flat, your hands are under your shoulders at the top....

Mmm interesting, my swing was too vertical before the lesson so it looks like I've over compensated, I'm also trying to turn with the shoulders more as I was very "army" previously which could explain why it's flattened so much.
Funny how another person can spot something so glaring which I didn't notice lol.

Hey ho, just got back from the driving range so I thought I'd fill you in.
After hitting the first few balls to the left I stopped and looked at my grip and stance straight after a bad shot. I could see my right hand had come over the left which had closed the club on impact.
I then noticed the first finger on my right hand was really hooked around the club which felt like it was trying to pull the hand around.
After changing my grip so this first finger sits in the end knuckle (is that the first or the last? the one near the tip anyway) I instantly started hitting the ball much straighter.
Hit another maybe 80 balls, only about 6 or 7 went left compared to the usual 30 or 40, most were straight and the odd minor slice about 10 yards right of target.
Really chuffed although I know it's still a long long road, at least I now have more confidence in where I can hit it, at least for now ;)

Do some swings with your left hand gripping normally and your right resting on your left wrist. You just cannot swing on that plane without rolling the left wrist over in an out of control fashion as you try desperately to square the club face..

Then go back to both hands normal, you should feel your right hand doing less now and the ball path will start to change.

That should help along with the advice above.

You are pretty much where I was when I took the game back up at the start of the year, I took and swung the club in very much from the inside. I only got away with it because I could almost repeat the squaring motion due to my very fast hand action. I was shooting mid 80s somehow! Took 4 months of work but I am back shooting mid 80s again with a better swing plane and way more birdie chances than I ever had before!

It's a good looking repeatable swing. You do have a very early release, hence your hook and fat shots. Try and work on keeping the hands infront of the ball at impact. Try and get a few videos from face on and you will see the club head overtakes the hands at impact.

Get a pw and try a 3/4 swing and feel your punching the club. This will help your release.

Get some vedios face on asap. Will help you understand what's happening and how to fix it.

Great stuff thanks mate.
Is the early release caused by too much/early hip rotation or by my hands/arms "uncocking" too early?
Could it also be part of the reason why I do loads of very high shots?
