Value Courses Article?

Following on from when suggestions were first requested on here http://forums.golf-monthly.co.uk//showfl...=true#Post96543

Was anyone else very disappointed with the article? I certainly was, maybe it's because golf in Scotland is so cheap, but recommending courses that charge £50+ a round does not qualify for a "value" game of golf in my mind.

I also have to seriously question the courses selected, and with no disrespect to birdieman's home track here (because it was one I suggested myself), but of the two selected from the north of Scotland, Brora I haven't played so can't comment, however Ballater while ticking all the right boxes doesn't compare with the other three from that area that I mentioned in my posts. While I did suggest Ballater, it simply can't hold a candle to Boat of Garten, I would suggest one of the finest courses you will find throughout the UK, and for just £33 midweek.

The trouble is when I find such a glaring mistake, it then makes me doubt any of the other recommendations, and that's before the 'value' criteria have even been taken into consideration.

Down here "Value" can = £50!!
Ordinary courses - nice but nothing special - can charge £30 at weekends without batting an eyelid.
But if you dig deep enough you can find value. A month or 2 ago I played the Forest of Arden for £35!!

What we find is that playing in Open comps at different courses is good value for money ,like Boat of Garten ,the 36 holer is £28 on a sturday you cant get better value than that, most opens are £10 - £20 which is great value as you play the course of the back tees My course was £22 for its open but against £70 on a Saturday its great value.

It depends on how you define "value" I suppose.
I've played courses where I have got on for as little as £15.00 a round. It usually turns out that I wouldn't go back to them again if I was offered a freebie.
Beau Desert the other day cost me £50.00 for 18 holes. I wouldn't bat an eyelid in paying the same again for the pleasure of playing it.

Value is the worth to the the individual.
Believe me, as a tight Yorkshire git. If you had played Beau Desert, you would want to play it again. £50 or not!

Too right. My aim was to come out at about 30p a shot but I failed Damn my roots

The society I run has had it's problems on this very topic. As secretary, it falls on me to organise the fixture list and I always try to give value for money. For me that means a decent course with at least 18 holes, good food and an all round top day out. For some of the older fellas, it means lots of holes for not much money...I am sure they'd play up and down a football pitch all day if it cost only a tenner!

For the last couple of years we have fixed the cost of the day out at £55, which gets you a bacon roll and a coffee on arival then 18, 27 or 36 holes, lunch (not 18 hole days) and 2 or 3 course dinner. Bung in half a dozen trophies and prizes. This year's fixtures are:

Nizels (18 holes)
Wrotham Heath (18 holes)
West Malling (30 holes)
Kings Hill (27 holes)
Hever Castle (27 holes)
The Ridge (36 holes)
Bearsted (27 holes)
Broome Park (18 holes)

Personally, I think that is cracking value...but I will never please them all!

By the way, best value I have ever had was £20 to play at Wentworth 2 weeks before Casey won the World Matchplay there. All the stands and hoardings were up and we almost had the place to ourselves! I did okay with 32 points off 18 at the time. Great day.

Never a truer word spoken!! I've never known anyone ever play a full round of golf without going into their bag once for a tee!!

This man spends more time looking for full and/or snapped tee's in and around tee boxes than I do looking for balls in the rough!!

Value for money? Come to Goswick and tee off after 3pm for £15....I'd challenge anyone to better that for value for money at a quality golf course!

I think the article was fair enough, based on the number of courses I know of and have played, the value for money aspect can vary enormously. I could have listed about 60 courses besides those in the mag that I think are good value. To me value for money starts with quality of course, followed by location aspects, then clubhouse and facilities and lastly the cost.

That's as may be, and a few of you have said the same, but it would then make a totally different article.

Value for this article was primarily qualified first by cost, once you get the cheapness factor in, you then decide if it is a decent course, and therefore 'value'. For example, someone suggested what was my home course last year - Walton Hall - which while satisfying the cheapness factor at under £20, was certainly not anywhere close to being 'value' in my book.
