Using the driver...

I didn't use my 7 iron all round today and no one made any comments...

HaHa, nice one! ;)

I very often require all fourteen clubs when I play my home course, it has a modern design and is longer than most other local courses, which sets it apart from them in my opinion.

Most golfers would score better if they played for position rather than out and out distance.
At my present club i use driver on 9 or 10 holes, depending on conditions. The primary reason is that i can reach all the par 5's in two if i hit a decent drive, if they were out of range i'd use whatever club was most likely to find the fairway, and still leave me comfortably within 3 shot range.
At my last club, i didn't use a driver or woods of any description, my 2 iron was the club of choice on the longer holes, although i kept the driver in the bag for team games.

Played today, no driver in the bag, was a 3 wood and a hybrid and found I didnt really need them either. 3 iron on the long holes, less on some of the par 4s, made a few birdies and a few others but played ok. Only person who took the proverbial out of me was me :)

But that's because you hit your 3i miles. May be more.

I think the biggest problem people have with the driver is they try & hit it unrealistic distances. A nice steady swing eliminates a lot of problems for me.

How much better are you with your 3 wood than your driver???? Over 18 holes how many more times are you likely to hit the fairway with the 3??? And how much shorter are you with it??

I played the front nine on saturday 10 over my handicap with my driver, the back nine I played 5 under my handicap with my 3 wood off the tee. Its really a no brainer for me to leave the driver at home until I can afford lessons.

Modern drivers are probably the easiest club in the bag to play. Every lie is perfect!
If you hit a 3 wood 200 yards you should be able to hit a driver 225 yards. That means hitting a 9 iron second instead of a 7 iron.

No reason why you should not continue to play with a 3 wood off the tee if you feel comfortable.
Slightly different technique with a driver and once you learn it your handicap will tumble down.

Agree with all the above from DFT apart from the fact they are the easiest club to play. Yes they they are large heads and such but any such slice or pull and at best it is usually pitch out sideways

I agree, i only use my 3 wood off the tee on very short par 4's when i need to leave a fuller shot or a drive may get me into trouble (bunkers, water dogleg etc.)

Drive accuracy is 75% + over the year so far.

Obviously not the problem for me, 2.2 puts a hole tells a story..

I don't think you need to make excuses to why your not using the driver, use what works for you...
I use my 3 wood of the tee and hit the same distance as the driver i just feel i'll hit more fairways with the 3 wood and that matters more to me than looking good with a driver in hand.

People putt of the edge of the green should they use a wedge ? NO, what ever brings the score down and you feel comfortable with...

You say you hit your 3 wood as far as your driver which does not make much sense.
It's a bit like me saying I hit my 5 iron further than my 3 iron.

I don't mean to the inch , there obviously is a difference but nothing major my 3 wood goes just as far, i've hit my 3 wood further many of times and out drove driver users. Not every swing is the same at our level . . .

Unless I got back into a bit of serious practice, I'm almost certain I'd hit a 5 iron further than a 3 iron. Haven't use one of those in anger for quite a while! And the 5 iron is a bit fragile these days too!

There has been some research done a while ago (lost track of it though) that found that the 5-wood was often the longest club - at least for English mid-high handicappers.
