Using Better Inward Half in the event of a tie

Perhaps count back should only consider gross on holes, would this make it any fairer, would you have won anyway?

Usually when a genuine h/c player is in with a shout for a win, they have played well anyway and capable of good scores per hole and I think that just as often this situation favours the higher h/c player, it can favour the lower one too.

I must say that this is, IMHO, a crazy discussion.

All of us who play in club competitions have handicaps.
Clubs have competitions for which prizes are awarded.
I've been a member of two clubs and both have worked in the same way, ie, best gross wins a prize and best net for each of div 1, div 2 & div 3.

As such if you are the best player in the club you should be aiming to win best gross & div 1.

High handicappers/bandits shouldn't affect your result as they are in a different division.

You should also be trying to win the scratch comp's & matchplay comp's which normally allow shots based on a fraction of difference.

I came 2nd in div' 1 this weekend to a 14 handicapper, we were both 3 under net but he played the back 9 one over gross and won on count back (him being 6 under his handicap fo those 9 holes).

If I hadn't 4 putted on the 4th the back 9 wouldn't have even come into it.

If you don't like losing on the back 9, do better on the front 9 and win by one shot!

Also if you are that good beating the mere mortals like myself shouldn't matter to you - you should just be trying to beat the course!

Just thinking aloud here but instead of using the ''back 9'' as countback, how about using the stroke index holes say 1-9 or 10-18?

The current method is, IMO, simple to operate and all players understand the system---Back 9, Back 6, Back 3, if still tied Back 2 and finally back 1. Have resorted to going as far as back 2 to find a winner at a few society outings.
