Use of phones on courses?

Really difficult one this as I would prefer no phones but I have been playing when:

Someone was firing pellets from off the course at people putting on a hole and the police were needed

My playing partner collapsed

A lady got hit on the head and I gave 1st aid, whilst an ambulance came

My heavy trolley electric broke down in a 36 hole comp

I bought my current house while playing Dale Hill in Sussex

We needed a ruling to stop play in exceptionally heavy rain

I hope I am not a jinx and, no, these things didn't all happen on the same day but a mobile was pretty useful!

Providing that you don't hold up play or otherwise generally interfere with the play of others (keep it on silent) I don't see any issue with having a phone on the course. In fact, one of my local 9 Hole courses (Sherdons) has a sign placed at the 8th tee inviting you to call the clubhouse to place an order for a bacon/sausage butty, which is nice.

Personally, as others have said, I carry mine in my bag on silent and check for messages occassionally. I'm married with three young children, so if I'm away from the house for up to 4-5 hours then I want to be contactable in case of emergencies.

I got in trouble for my comments on this topic a while back. I'm very anti mobiles BUT players that need to be contactable or need to contact is OK.

The trouble is drawing the line and people abusing the club rules, whatever they are.

There are some members at mine that carry mobiles and it's interesting to note that those who have a genuine reason to do so you'd hardly notice them checking for texts or answering a call whilst wandering up the fairway.

If these responsible members actually had to have it on super-loud ringing as well, I'd be more than happy.
