I order my prescriptions online and went to order a repeat last week which normally would be ready to pick up in 2 days.

So my wife goes to Boots to pick the prescription up but nothing is there for me so I call the surgery to see what the craic is......

Now, I am an insulin dependant diabetic so part of this means I have to test my blood sugar levels regularly and recently I have been having a few issues with control due to the warmer weather and being a bit more active than normal and the fact that I have been away on holiday a couple of time in the last 6 weeks so I have went through more testing strips than I normally would as the more eating and drinking you tend to do on holiday means I test a lot more than usual......

The reason I did not get my repeat of the testing strips is "Because you are not due a repeat so you will need to wait another 8 days until you can have the repeat".

So I point out that I need these wee strips to let me function in life otherwise I am playing guess work with my sugar levels to which the reply came "Overuse of items cost the NHS dearly and that is why you will need to wait":mmm:

Eventually I go to the surgery and play holy hell and ask them if they think it is okay if I go into a diabetic coma and end up in hospital for a week and at what cost would that be to the NHS??!!

Eventually my Doctor intervenes and after much discussion he concedes that I should be given the repeat and sorts it out after I had taken 2 hours off work to try and sort the mess out.

I am still in shock at the treatment. Am I supposed to regulate how many times I test my levels??!

If I could swear on here I would.

Great Britain eh?:mad::angry:

I read in the Daily Mail that it's the immigrants who pay no taxes yet come over here just to suck the NHS of all its money.

Just thought I'd get it in before someone else did.;)

Unbelievable. The Doctor would be giving you a hard time if you weren't managing your monitoring properly. Now you get grief because you have been monitoring properly  Unreal.

I thought he said he was over-monitoring due to a temporary change in climate/lifestyle

Bad news that it came to a verbal conflict before resolved... but... you should have planned for extra use in the same way you plan & pack your suntan cream before going on hols

Have had the same issue this year with my inhalers for Asthma - have had to fight tooth and nail to get extra ones to help me through the bad phase at the moment

Unfortunate but I assume they are only following their process (as opposed to common sense). Cost cutting is key in this day and age and I would guess that there is an awful lot of waste that can be recouped by tightening up on things like this rather than just issuing without question. Still crap when you're on the receiving end though and like you say giving more could be more cost effective anyway.

You said this ^^^^

I figured this was not your first holiday since becoming diabetic and wondered why you wouldn't plan on using more test strips?

I'm a smoker and I wouldn't go away for the weekend without enough cigs!

I had.

I asked for more strips earlier than usual and was told no.

It was not me that was unprepared.

Thanks for the concern.:smirk:

That puts a slightly diff context to things!

Pity you choose to exclude that info and made me look an unconcerned ejit for stating what seemed obvious! :p

I'm diabetic and on daily medication. I'm swapping doctor surgeries as I've moved. The old surgery have refused to issue another prescription as I am technically no longer on the books and the new one won't issue one until they receive my notes and I've had a meds review with a doctor. These have yet to materialise despite the old surgery adamantly stating everything has gone and it should be there. Fallen completely between the cracks and played merry hell with the new surgery already to no avail so planning to plonk myself on reception at the old one and demand to see the duty doctor tonight in a vain attempt to get at least enough meds for the next two weeks or so

i take 34 tablets daily,4 pt dialysis exchanges daily and 3 injections weekly so my dealings with the woman behind the counter at the chemists or worse still the doctors is a recurring nightmare.
All my dialysis exchanges come direct from Ireland as does all my hand wash and dressings packs, dropped off and put into my storage shed by the company,by injections being temperature sensitive are delivered by a secure company from JERSEY that i have to sign for,my tablets are done on line to my doctors 5 mins from my house,in the past 12 months i have had someone else's tablets delivered 3 times, wrong dosage 2 times and now i have had some tablets i have never heard of,when i spoke to the doctors receptionist she didnt have a clue, only when i spoke to the chemist was i told that some of the tablets i take have run out of licence so they can now buy them in from the far east !!!!!!,i am waiting for a reply from my doctor if this is NHS policy or the surgery making savings.

As a diabetic you get all your treatment free on the NHS (ie taxpayer pays) so I suppose its a bit much to expect that if you need extra test strips to go on the piss that you save yourself two hours and a coma and go to the chemist and buy some. simple ...

Bit harsh that ?

But quick question - can you in an emergency buy over the counter or is it prescription only ?

My local docs are talking about having emergency meds for patients - ie if i needed an inhaler quick but couldnt get a doc appointment etc i could pop to the pharmecy and request an emergecny one and they would check i was on the list and issue me one
