played yesterday and no one saw where the ball crossed into the lateral water hazard.

Whilst I realise you could playthe ball again from the original position if you of your fellow competitors are not virtually certain where the ball crossed the hazard re ther any other options.

The emphasis being that nobody knew or were virtually certain where the ball crossed into the hazard

There are two issues.

Is it in the hazard? There must be knowledge or virtually certainty that it is.

If so, where did it cross the margin? The player must use his "best judgment" in determining that point. Virtual certainty is not required for this issue.

The ball was seen to go towards the hazard and it was virtually certain it was in the hazard. However nobody knew where it crossed the line

As Atticus say it come down to a case of best judgement in a situation where it is known or virtually certain the ball is in the hazard. Agreement between the player and fellow competitors as to the point it is likely to have crossed is an acceptable wat to determine the point.

If after dropping additional information comes to light such as someone in another group who saw where the ball crossed, then the ball should be re-dropped based on this new information. If the ball had been played prior to this new information then the player continues without penalty.
