Can anyone recommend a decent ultralight shaft? I'm getting a new driver head and fancy a go with one in it. My previous shaft was a graffaloy prolaunch x stiff, but i was thinking about going back to stiff as the x was hard work at times. Should i stay with x stiff in an ultralight?

Any advice appreciated

The flex will depend on the shaft a lot. If you want a good shaft, the leading make in lightweight shafts seems to be Miyazaki. Their shafts come in some of the Cleveland clubs. Titleist are also putting the Bassara in the new 913, and that is a pretty light shaft, but a good one. There is also a new Matrix ultralight, the Reign, but that will cost some serious dough.

The best advice is probably to go to a specialist fitter with access to a good range of better shafts for better players. Precision Golf in Egham, Surrey is certainly such a place.

What's the head? How heavy is it?

With Ultralite shafts - like the Miyazakis (39, 43 and 49gms) a light head is required - or a short shaft - to avoid an unacceptably high swing weight, or a chunk of lead tape near the grip that rather destroys the 'ultralite' nature of the shaft!

And suitability also depends on swing type. Generally not recommended for 'hitter' type swings as torque tends to be quite high, so face can be opened by this type of swing.

Ultralite gear is really targetted at those with slow swing speeds (80-85ish and below) in an attempt to increase it by 5mph or so. It certainly worked for me after a broken ankle meant I was swinging 10mph slower than previously.

Presumably, the X flex PL Blue you have been using is the 65gm version. They have a 45gm version but highest flex is 'S' - and, as above, it's high torque. Not a great deal of experience of PL Blue, but what there was was not great (I am naturally high launch anyway!). The Red suited me much better.

Good Luck in the search!

The head is 195g, swing speed 105. Maybe ultralight isn't for me after doing some research. The PL blue I had was the 75g version, really liked it but hit it way too high. May try the PL red in stiff, or see what comes up on e bay
