We have organised medal competitions from middle of March to the middle of October, pretty much every Saturday, occasional Sundays and one Wednesday medal each month. Only a few of them do you have to book in weeks in advance, the others you just turn up, book in and wait for your turn to tee off.

All the comps are medal stroke play, but when I vist my brother in law's course in Newcastle they regularly have stableford and bogey comps with only occasional strokeplay comps.

What happens at your own club and what are your thoughts on each type of comp ?

Also can you just turn up and play or do you have to book in in advance ?

We have a medal on the sat and a stableford on the sunday and switch them over the following week and have other comps to play in + there is always a midweek stableford.

We play a mixture of medal, stableford and team events every Saturday although the majority of comps are medal.

Our start sheets go up three weeks in advance on a friday evening. These usualy get full quickly and there are about 150 places and depending on the type of comp it's three or fourballs.

We have medals on Saturdays all summer (March-October). In addition we have a medal comp on Wednesdays in June. Rest of summer Wednesdays are a 14 week stableford with best 5 scores counting. Our members would scream if we played the level of stableords some clubs play with just a "monthly medal" etc. Just to be controversial.....stablefords, although I accept they have their place are not proper golf at the end of the day. Ideal for winter, ideal for a league, but would I want to play them 3/4 the time ?? No way.

we have mainly medals plus a handful of stableford plus one Bogey competition. The arrangement of our medals are bizarre though. We play March/April/May medals all in April and Sept/Oct/Nov medals all in September!

Personally i would like to see more of a mix but i agree Medal is the best test but only really enjoyable once you've finished a good round!

We have a monthly stableford and medal. You can enter in advance and get drawn with a partner at anytime between 8.00 and 10.00. Otherwise you can join a swindle and go out en masse with them (about 10.30 in winter and 11.30 in summer) or arrange a 3-4 ball and roll up, pay your £3 and queue.

We also have other events including a bogey event, several foursome, a greensome and a number or single and pairs matchplays. Our stablefords are usually fully booked for the advanced entry and the swindle fields are always large. If you are rolling up it can be difficult to get out if you time it wrong. Sadly in my eyes medals are less popular. I guess a lot of members don't share the passion for a proper challenge and the fact that a big score rules you out. Its usually the higher handicappers that moan about too many medals even when the event is split into divisions

As a 5-day member we get a Medal and a Stableford each month - just book a time and off you go.The 7-dayers have similar but they get drawn. Only weekend comp I can enter without paying more is the Club Championship.

We play from memory 7 stableford comps per year and the rest are medal. IMO all comps should be medal!!

Does it really matter? I like Stableford, it doesnt mean a bad hole is a card wrecker, it gives far more enjoyment to the game than medal, though I like medal as well I just think Stableford is a good format.

We have mixture of comps throughout the year although we have a monthly medal and stableford and most midweek comps are just roll up stablford though we have had 4BBB and "sorry golf".

Every sunday is comp day usually Monthly medal/stableford then the other sundays are OOM comps as are the tuesdays.

I dont disagree that stableford is a good format. But i just feel that i stand more of a chance of winning the comp if it is a medal round and the stableford format plays more into the "higher handicap golfers" hands (dont like to make a distinction normally between high and low).

Monthly medal April to September.
Stapleford every Sat/Sun--midweek comp every Tuesday from mid april
A few team events, shotgun starts during the year.
Single. double & mixed matchplay.
A Blues comp in September.

Like I said above, stablefords can be fun, have their place but are not proper golf. The format allows you to say "Although I had a 8/9/10/NR on that par 4, I'll tell you what, I'll put myself down for a nett six". I'm sure playing mulligans can be enjoyable too and probably also has it's place but thankfully not on this side of the pond.
