two questions

1. If your playing a betterball pairs competition, can you enter a weekly stableford comp for the same round of golf?

Also,

2. On the fringe, you select a putter, and touch the ball with the puter when addressing the ball, whats the penalty? My guess is that the ball isnt on the green so the ruling regarding meaning to strike the ball is the relevant rule and nothing happens,(as opposed to the one for when on the actual green and there's a penalty).

Possibly, but not if it's matchplay. (weird idea?!)

Scenario one: we had a betterball pairs comp match tonight, there was also a weekly stableford comp on today. Both teams happened to play both, we putted out where we could and picked up if we couldnt score stableford points. We still conceded short ish putts for the matchplay pairs, but putted it out for the stableford anyway. it was fine between the teams and passed without incident.

Scenario 2: If your ball is on the green and you ground your putter and touch the ball - thats a stroke. However, i was on the fringe and touched my ball when addressing it. I called it and said i'd count it as a stroke because i'd rather not get into an argument over it.

However, my actual feeling is that because i wasnt on the green, and i didnt swing, or intend to hit the ball, it shouldnt have counted as a stroke? (i think there's a rule which suggests if you touch the ball while taking a practice swing then that doesnt count and you'd replace the ball - and i think that would apply in my situation above too)

betterball pairs was matchplay, and the stableford was, well stableford.

Sounds odd that officially you cant play both at the same time, but i havent a clue if we could or couldnt! we did anyway. we won 5&4 for the second consecutive night and i carded 39 points too. maybe i'll just get DQ'd!

As long as the ball didn't move from point A to point B then you're ok.

Is that even if you physically touch the ball with the club as you're addressing it, as long as it doesn't come to rest in a different position?

I did that about a month ago in a medal (in the fairway) and counted a penalty shot on my score. Was I wrong?

Just quickly, if the pairs betterball was matchplay (it sounds as though it was as you talk about giving putts?), then no, you can't combine matchplay and strokeplay formats in one round and would have been in breach of Rule 33-1 as below:-

"... Certain specific Rules governing stroke play are so substantially different from those governing match play that combining the two forms of play is not practicable and is not permitted. The result of a match played in these circumstances is null and void and, in the stroke play competition, the competitors are disqualified..."

I'm sorry to say that it does. one shot penalty and replace the ball.
A ball that ocillates does not move off it's original position, therefor hasn't moved...no penalty.

"A stroke is the forward movement of the club with the intention of striking at and moving the ball".
To me, that means you have to intend to hit. (i know its a shot if you swing and miss, because of the intent).

Its not 100% clear because the two rule quoted contradict each other, no?

That's what happened, it wobbled but ended up exactly where it had been. as it was match play and we were not sure, i just said i'd take a 2 shot pen and carry on. was green side with a straightforward chip which i fancied from about 8 feet for a 4 too. lost the hole, obviously

I think if it was a penalty (which it wasn't) it would have been 1 shot.

Penalties that are 2 strokes in strokeplay tend to be loss of hole in matchplay.

On 17, i played my third into the green (par 5), and was sure i saw it gather to the low side and onto the fringe, walked up and chipped it to tap-in range, tapped in and then discovered it wasnt mine! mine was nearer the hole than i thought for 3 and i'd chipped the wrong ball. That was another school-boy mistake, and another blob.

Both times i played it the writing was not facing skywards, and, there is normally some text you can see. i couldnt believe it.

I'll not be making those mistakes again.
