At the risk of attracting howls of disdain .... My soft-faced putter works well for me within 10-12ft but I struggle with pace & lack of feel on longer putts. On the other hand, my old Ping solid metal putter works well on distance but I can't get on with it for the short stuff (which is why I switched).

Has anyone ever carried two putters in their bag and chosen depending on type of putt required?

How often to you practice your lag putting with your current putter?

Good point, about as often as I practice in general (not enough) but there's no question that I feel more confident on lag putts with the hard faced putter in my hands & I have experimented with 20 long putts with both putters & the results with the hard face were about twice as consistent (within 4ft). I'm just not sure whether the changing back & forth during a round will do more harm than good & wondered if anyone's actually tried it?

I have a milled face Scotty and I'm just as confident from 30ft as I am from 3ft. The main reason is I practice my putting quite alot. I don't expct to hole from 30ft, but I always feel I can leave it close.

Practice, the same as any facet of this game, is key I'm afraid. The more you practice, the better your judgement will become.

I play with someone who always has 2 putters in his bag.

He's a bit like Sheldon off Big Bang, you just don't want to ask why.........

I'm exactly the same.

Putter #1 - Great inside 15' but struggle with distance control outside of that.
Putter #2 - Rarely leave a lag putt very far away but don't hole enough inside 10'.

My solution. Practice more with putter #1. I couldn't stand the thought of wasting a club on another putter.

How do you decide which putter to use for the in between ones?

I think it's whatever works. If you have the space for it. If it reduces the amount of shots you take in a round then go for it! Mickelson had his 2 drivers, why can't you have 2 putters?

I have no doubt it's true Val'.

I can just imagine the conversation between Philly Mick and Bones about which driver to use

Very true mate, just shows how much these pro's think about their bag setup

2 drivers, 4/5 wedges, putter and a few Irons should suffice for big phil :rofll:

I think he had one set for a Draw and the other set for straight/fade so he didn't have to change his swing.
If I remember, the Draw Driver was an inch or so longer for a bit more distance.

I don't see a problem with having 2 of any club or even a left handed one as long as it doesn't leave you any gaping holes in your distances.
I would draw the line at a Chipper though......

I remember Butch commenting on the reason for this during the commentary, he said Phil made the decision to have one with an extra long shaft to allow him to hit it even further on certain hole to carry beyond fairways bunkers and doglegs
