It's HID's birthday next weekend, and valentines, so we're off for a weekend of luxury at Turnberry. No self interest at all in the choice of venue but I'll be sneaking off for a round on both the kintyre and ailsa courses....

Other than that I was wondering if anyone had any top tips for things to do in and around the resort? HID is starting to play golf so we'll probably hit the range and 9 hole course at some stage.

If you are not eating in the hotel, Wildings is a very decent restaurant in nearby Maidens. There is not much to do nearby without returning to Ayr.

You'll be hoping the "Girvan Lighthouse" is on duty at The Ailsa.

His stories are awesome...

personally i would play the golf and enjoy the resort, well it is meant to be a romantic break. nice walk along the beach a visit to Culzean Castle . failing that a wee walk along the road to maidens to the pub

and the whisky shop in Kirkoswald in the old school and which my family used to live in

Agree with amcc, beyond the eating at the fish place not a great deal to do without travel. Nice castle and grounds just up the coast. It's cheeky but if you walk up the beach from the north end of maidens you can walk up into the grounds bypassing the paying bit. I found this out after paying by walking to my cottage on the way back!

If you are traveling from Edinburgh peel off at Ayr and take the Coast road.
Stop at the Electric Brae which always seems to amaze our guests.
Robert Burns Birthplace Museum is excellent. It should be, it cost £23m.
Better eating at Wildings at Maidens than Turnberry.
Minishant Inn and Kirkmichael Arms are also good country pubs [best to book at weekend evenings]
Culzean Castle is very nice.

I think Peter is still there, he was in the autumn, good guy.
Keep it safe off the tee on Kintyre and take two clubs more than you think it is on Tappie Toorie.

dont listen to him, yes the NEW holes arent in keeping with the old Arran course. top tip if its windy put your brake on your trolley lol

Its a terrible creation. A poor effort to fleece visitors out of more money under the Turnberry Umbrella. There are 3 maybe 4 good holes and the rest are poor to mediocre!

He's been starter on Ailsa everytime I've played. Hopefully he'll still be there when you go :-)

Haven't played Turnberry in a while, two fabulous courses and the hotel and spa are lovely.

Didn't know big Peter was there. He used to have a sport shop in Girvan and was always good for a chat. My lasting image of him though is swinging from the crossbar in a Scottish Cup Final vs Aberdeen
