Thinking of buying one of these to get some exercise in over the winter.
Any recommendations about which model to buy.
Heard some are quite noisy and eat tyres but some personal experience would be nice to hear

I have a practically brand new one sitting in my garage, when I get home I'll dig out the details and take some photos if you're interested.

Think it cost me around £170 about 3 years ago, yours for a fraction of the cost :-)

I've had a turbo, and a VR trainer, but because the back wheel is fixed it doesn't feel like riding a bike and also it's a bit boring. Another option would be rollers, which are a lot more engaging, and feels more like riding a bike

Id agree about the turbo, its as boring as it can get and a heart rate monitor is a must if its for training.

Rollers, are good, but not resistance and only really good for learning to spin a small gear.

can be a disaster if its done in your front room:rofl:

Get one with a fluid brake and a big flywheel for a more realistic and quieter ride.
As for tyre wear, get a proper turbo tyre, which will also cut down the noise significantly. They are a bugger to get on and off, so if you can, have a dedicated wheel which you just swap on and off on demand.
If you get easily bored, get some DVDs like Spinnervalls or similar. There isn't a triathlete in the country who doesn't know coach Troy. No idea how proper cyclist rate them

Just get out in the wet, and enjoy your ride. Turbos and tread mills are similar, they are dull, boring, sweaty, noisy, and rubbish. Buy some decent lights, and get out in the real stuff.

As per the get fit thread, I have an elite turbo trainer. About 90 quid. I have stuck a 23" road wheel with a slick road tyre into my 29r MTB. I think it's great, yes it's a little noisy but I can still cycle and watch TV. Brilliant for those miserable cold winter mornings or nights when it's too horrible to go running out.

Thanks Rooter, that was the one I was thinking about getting. Not too fussed about the noise as I will be in the garage, probably with earphones in anyway.

With a decent tyre the noise is really not that bad, I can cycle in front of the tv without it being crazy loud no problem.

When I suggested that I was going to buy one, both my wife and daughter said in unison, oh no, the last one was really noisy !!. I had a second hand one and used it with my mountain bike with knobbly tyres :o without ever realising they were the main cause of the problem

I used to use a magnetic resistance t/trainer with my Orange Clockwork, I just had a dedicated spare wheel and run it with a Specialised Fatboy (slick). Was quiet, but very boring. However to be able to maintain the heart rate in the exact zone required meant much less time was needed to achieve the same targets:)

Did you get one mate?
On the look myself as I really do need to get my @rse in gear.
I'm tempted by the Tacx Satori Smart, gets decent reviews and it can be connected to devices via bluetooth or some Ant thing.
