Just a post to note that Traditions was (relatively) recently sold - to a company (Pin-High) run by an ex-Crown Pro who started his Crown career at that very course, so should be aware of its attributes. Not sure what changes, if any, are/were envisaged, but easing the water issue - pumps are required rather than drainage! - is the major challenge imo.
Perhaps worth checking out before writing off permanently, but there are better courses in the area, even when it's dry!

The pumps they have broke 2 years ago. Crown never fixed them because, according to the pro shop, 4 years ago the ball started rolling for the sale of the course.
The first thing to be fixed were the pumps, which ate up a lot of the budget. So some bunkers are GUR as they are not in good shape. However, the guy seems to know whats what which means, I guess, the course should start to improve in the next 12/18 months. According to the guy in the pro shop.
I like the course a lot, agreed there are nicer ones out there but at £30 a round or less with deals etc, it's not too shabby! It's generally quiet too, not many slow rounds.

In fact, i rather like Pyrford! On the same flood plain type land (the course is often below the level of the boats meandering past on the canal) yet doesn't have the same issues with bogginess! Quite a few rather good holes and a pretty good clubhouse and afters setup!

Not sure i agree.. I like the course, but HATE the fact that I will lose atleast 4-6 balls every time I go out there. Sometimes I am more brave/foolish and will end up discovering water where none existed beforehand.
I too like Traditions, at the price point, it provided good value and it has a few good holes.. e..g 9, 16, 17, 18.. but holes like the 5th ruin the experience.. I hope it see better days soon..

Hi I'm in the Guildford area, only been playing golf since June this year. Became a member in September as I was spending £300 a month in green fees lol. Yeah I've got a bit obsessed even though I'm awful!
put my last card in last week for my handicap! As expected 28! Saying that, I went out today, front 9 only and scored my highest ever score for 9 holes, 48. Really pleased with that. Hoping to start reducing the handicap soon!
Traditions is a goat track, certainly compared to Pyrford down the road. Hoebridge would be my preferred choice in that neck of the woods

I've played hoebridge over the summer. I really enjoyed the course, except that crazy hole (17th?) dog leg up the side of the slope...drove me insane that hole... Only thing was how busy the place was. It was heaving!

In that area I enjoy Milford GC.
It drains well, they do good deals and there are some cracking good holes, especially the par 3's.

Yes, if the area extends to 20-odd miles
. I've played Milford more times that there are forum members! Final two holes are great matchplay holes. 17th a tiddler over water and a risk-reward par 5 closing hole over water/trees.

I think he means the dampness of the hole. It's one of the wettest ones - last year it got so wet it became par 4 with temp tees before the pond on the right.
Still damp but playable.

Yeah i meant the waterlogging on the 5th.. i played it when half the fairway was ankle deep. Then they changed it to a P4 which made it marginally better, but you still had to get to the tee box. I have enjoyed the format if only they could fix the water issue..

Already had the voucher before I looked it up so I really was hoping that I could give a good review here, despite the warnings, sadly not the case.
Arrived about 9am to find 3 cars in the car park, presumably belonging to the three staff members in the clubhouse. Checking in was simple, and although an hour early we were told we could go out as soon as we were ready, but to be aware that some of the fairways were a little wet...... Having taken two hours to get there, breakfast was needed first, the sausage baps were already made up, and then re-heated but have to say it was surprisingly tasty (a plus point). We wondered over to the first tee, well, where the markers indicated where the first tee was. It looked like a tee box, I think, but couldn't really differentiate the grass (what there was of it) from the rough/ fairway around the tee. First drives off and we were both ankle deep in bog, somewhere down the first, essentially the shape of things to come. It became quickly apparent that no matter we hit, we should walk on the paths for as much as possible as the ground was swimming. There are two halves to the course, one side was pretty much below water, the other fared better, but overall, the condition of the course was poor. The tees weren't mown, were no different to the fairways, which had grass, but nowhere near enough - very much resembled this
. Many of the bunkers were GUR with free drops. Most of this we could deal with, it's winter golf and we knew it wouldn't be in best condition, but the thing that got me most was the amount of dog cr@p all over the place, on the 18th my ball was literally sitting in the middle of three piles of the stuff. There were dog walkers all over the place, and it seemed fairly obvious that the residents of Pyrford were far elevated above cleaning up after their animals.
It was a shame really, I actually liked the layout of the course, some of the holes were quite challenging, especially having not played there before, and if it was in better condition on in mid summer, could be a good looking track. it's going to take them a lot of work, time and investment to bring it up to scratch, but since there was only one other player on the course, that might be a while. Despite nabbing 41 points with a blob, I'm very unlikely to go back and try it again.

Sorry you had a bad, but expected, winter experience. It's a summer course only.
