I've had an invite to play Traditions GC and just wondered whether it's a course that I should drive the M25 for

Thanks for your views

Certainly one of the lowest level Crown courses!

But is it really about the Golf? If so, Pyrford (pretty much next door!) is a much better (also Crown run) course!

It seems a friend is going to arrange a charity bash for all levels of golfer

Then that's the reason, not the course!

A few good holes. But, as Hawkeye posted, can be very wet underfoot at times. I'm not sure, but it could actually be below the level of the Wey River that runs alongside it!

NOt a great course. Few if any stand out holes and it is wet underfoot at this time of year. If you had a choice Pyford is a better bet. However as a one of charity do then it'll suffice and won't beat up the higher handicappers

As the boys have already said.. not the greatest but not a goat track either. It is a decent summer track, but this time of the year does get waterlogged. The 5th P5 is generally partly closes. There are however a few good holes IMO.
Pyford Next door is much better but haven't played it in ages. Lots of other crown properties around.
However does not matter if you are in a charity gig.. Just pack an extra pair of socks.

Played it a couple of weeks ago for the first time. It was very wet! Annoyingly, neither the scorecards nor the tee box showed a map of the hole - there were 3 or 4 holes where we really had to work out which direction we should be aiming our tee shot, and there's also little streams everywhere which on a first play really caught us out. It's also pretty open, and on a windy day like when we played it makes the course quite tough for beginners like me.

I'd imagine it would be a nice summer track when dried out, though as a P&P with Silvermere and Hoebridge either side, I'm not sure how often I'll be going back as I much prefer the other 2.

I love that course in the summer, I played there before Xmas, 3 holes closed officially, should have closed at least 9 as the water on many was unacceptable.

So if its a Summer day, great! If not, avoid avoid avoid!

I know I am a bit biased in this as it's my home golf club, but Merrist Wood down the road from Traditions is pretty good. Plays long and it's got a few challenging holes. The 9th is tricky with two ditches running across the fairway, and the 17th over the lake is quite challenging to play. My personal favourite is the 16th Par 3, down hill surrounded by bunkers! The green is really contoured and the back pin position is on slope which makes for some fun frustrating hard putts!

Is Merrist Wood playable at the moment? I left there in August... the winter wet months were awful!

As for Traditions... they have been sold by Crown Golf to a private owner. According to the Pro Shop, Crown hadn't fixed broken drainage pumps for 2 years. Hence the unplayable fairways and holes last winter.

I played there Saturday, and the course is damp, but not too bad. Not as bad as it was last year anyway.

Dufferman.. come back to Merrist W.. you know you want to..

The course is alright. The greens are (still) good. The fairways are alright, but some of the paths and the beyond the first cut can be very boggy.. unfortuntately, thats where i spend most of my time. The back 9 are way better, guess it does not get as much foot fall as the front 9.

Did not know that traditions is no longer crown... Its alright in the summer, but a sure miss otherwise..

Yeah I played there on Sunday, miserable conditions but the course appeared to be holding up well. they've roped off some approaches to the greens, but the greens themselves were in good condition considering. The rough is playing hard though! quite challenging to get out of at times compared to the summer months.

Just as a matter of interest, how busy is traditions in the summer? I've heard pine ridge is rammed, but I am new to the area and haven't played either of those courses yet.

Merrist Wood = wet in the winter.
Traditions = even wetter and they don't close the course. I've played when there's been more water on the course than grass, particularly 1, 2, 5, 11, 16, 17.

Pine Ridge is good public course, better than Traditions IMHO. Some tight holes but mostly open. And being public you will get all types of players on the course. i think they're resolved the 6hr rounds when there used to be 1hr wait on hole 2...stand corrected if this hasn't been sorted!!!

Pine Ridge is proabably the pick of the lot -also drains very well. The way it is setup, you dont lose too many balls. But it can get v busy
Merrist W is much tougher than PR, but can get boggy outside the fairways and greens. So if you are a straight shooter, then a good place to be.

Whereabouts are u based? I am a Crown member at MW, so if you fancy a game at MW or PR let me know.. (though i dont play enuf). Hoebridge is another cracker in the area..
