Are you one of the dying breed that thinks golf should be all hickory shafts traditional wound balata balls or even feahtries...rofl. Do you hark for the days when woods were woods & persimmon was the driver of choice. Do you decline the course guides the 150 yard markers, do you hark back to the days of the sheep mowing the greens & digging the bunkers on a traditional winswept links in tweed jacket & plus twos or fours. Do you not know the meaning of the word GPS & think a satalite is some sort of valve radio to tune into the home service whilst reading a copy of the Times or Guardian

Or are you a super modern hip kid with all the latest Satalite navigation & laser technology with ultra lite weight shafts in your state of the art multi functional fully adjustable wangy stick you call a driver made of space age graphite crown & something connected with something to do with the Shuttle. Are you base layer & man made fabric mad & wonder why some people hark back to days of yor, when Braid Vardan & Taylor designed courses., when you could have an 8,000yard monster to be freewheeling your way down on your stand on two wheeled buggy.

Or are you a bit of both, greatful for the new technology in the latest drivers,, happy to use GPS & course guides where available, but part of you still harks back with slightly rose tinted Sungogs/Oakleys, to days of yor, when it was you against the course with whatever nature could provide or throw at you. Greatful to be able to save a few shots but curious enough to want to see what score you would cobble together on a winswept links with persimmons & hickory shafted rusty blades, in an old leather or tartan bag. slung over your Footjoy waterproofs.... Well we do have a foot in both camps when we are both traditionalist & Modernist together.

The game is alot easier now with all the new space age technology and therefore more enjoyable? However I would like all the new clubs with just 150yrd markers and thats it, then its you against the course.

Carpe, when I started playing golf 100 years ago, the courses didnt even have 150s !!!
I miss the days when my dad used to produce all manner of tees and stuff from his cardigan pockets with the leather buttons down the front.
Back in the 60s, we didnt have pro v1s, 460 cc drivers matching irons and wedges with swing weight analysis and soft insert itsy bitsy sabretooth ansers. We used the Dunlop 65 (black wrapper), an old wood with 'screws' a cut down half set of irons from my dad and a putter pinched from the local park
Happy days.................................................
Couldn't break a 100 though :D

Greatful for all the advantages new technology gives to playing the game & wouldn't turn a single one of them down.

However, I've always been a bit of a closset traditionalist at heart. I don't like to make life too easy for myself & I do think sometimes all this new technology detracts at time from, for want of a better word... One-ness with the course & the game. Its at times like all this electronic & graphite clutter muffles & numbs the senses. Golf for me should almost be a mystical experience if that makes any sense.

So I've definitly got a foot in both Bunkers in camp Cernunnos

I haven't been playing long enough but I do see some wearing both plus-fours and plus-twos; they look practical but wouldn't be seen dead in them.
I also see the modern golfer with the three-quarter cargos; wouldn't be seen dead in those either.

I think technology can be taken too far and, so long as you leave me my GPS, electric trolley, 460, rifle shafts, etc, there are areas where it could be pegged back.

I would have to think about this as I like to be as Individualist as I poss can in the real world, but I do like things from the past and things of today, but until now I have never had to think about them so maybe I am a Couldntgiveastuffualist? :D but you have no such catagory in your poll. :D

Having tried to make my way in the game (and not getting very far) and using balata and butter knife irons I'm all for 460cc heads and large sweetspots. Why was it you only hit an iron thin when it was freezing cold so it shook every bone in your body. How many times did you only mrginally miscue with a balata and have a nice smile on it.

I would describe myself as an out and out modernist who can however appreciate the traditionalist values of the game despite having never experienced them. (not been playing for very long)

I probably would not have taken up the game without the aid of modern technology. Without big cavity backs and perimeter weighting I doubt I would have ever got a golf ball off the ground.

Do you have a cardigan to keep them in ya Celtic hippy :)

:D I do have cardigans, but none specifically for golf. Think I probably ought to get a cardigan to go with my Tartan Stromberg trousers I'll be wearing for the match on the Montomerie @ Celtic Manor, for this Celtic Hippy :D

That's it then ball issue solved its either the Slazenger B51 or Dunlop 65 ball & sod the performance issues. The feel off the putter & wedge is good enough with them for me anyway.

Though I think the leather buttoned cardigan can wait till I find some nice old blades & some highly polished persimmon wooded woods. Would be interesting to use them at Axecliff next time I'm down in Devon.

Defo a foor in both camps for me. Yes, it's great that we have all this techonology that makes the game easier for us plebs.

However courses are in many cases being made obsolete by the huge distances that even moderately good players can now hit the ball. Perhaps the length issue rather than ease of striking is more my concern and why I take the gifts of technology with a wary eye.
