Top of the league!!!!!

I have been supporting Reading since the late 60's. went to my first game at Elm Park in 1970, when we beat Barrow 6-2 in the old 3rd division. In those days our nickname was the buscuitmen after Huntley and Palmers. Used to be able to see the floodlights from my garden. Never understood supporting any team but your local one.

I follow Chesterfield FC and always have done and wont follow anyone else 1985 my first game I went to with my Uncle.Whenever I am back in the area I always go to a match if they are at home. I too cannot see the point of supporting a club that is nowehere near where you were born and brought up. Like some of the locals round our area that follow Man Utd and Liverpool and the most recent additions Chelsea and Man City just dont get it myself never have and never will.

What's wrong with supporting your local Irish team? Is it because they're not very good that you don't support them?.

We did have a local team in the second tier of our league & i did support them, Kildare County , club only lasted a couple of years , i supported Shelbourne for years, was at many a home game with about 45 other people in the old fully amatuer days . i remember watching a FAI cup replay against a non league club,in the pouring rain on a tuesday night wonderin am i nuts or what .. Still watched Bohs beat us 4-1 (i think)that sunday

i travelled half way across Europe watching the national team , last away game was Austria in 1995, we lost 3-1 , we used to bring a tri colour with date & venue etc & get the team to sign it , Quinny was the ony one that would that time so that was it .. had a season ticket for home international game same seat every game in the then landsdown road (pre jackie charlton era aswell), used to get 2 Everton games a year .

Very seldom see games now as family , extra job to pay the mortgage etc .. Started supporting Everton in rebellion to all my family & mates supporting the "others" & ive stuck with it .. Have you seen our results , mad maybe , glory hunter ?? eh ?

I'm sorry to press the point but I don't understand why you'd want to support an English football team. That's like me supporting a Scottish or a Welsh football team.
I'm just wondering how much better Irish football would be financially if all the Irish spent their hard earned on following Irish teams instead of travelling over to watch Man U, Liverpool, etc. This can also be said for the lower league English teams. Rather than most of Devon supporting Man U, if they supported Plymouth Argyle or Torquay, for example, how good would Plymouth or Torquay be with the additional funds which would, in time, equate to better players?
In 1996 Man U won the FA Cup. That night me and my mates decided to go to Kingston, Surrey for a few drinks. We walked in to the first bar and it was full of blokes wearing Manchester United tops. They were chanting the songs and generally revelling in the victory. It made me sick! The people in that bar, to a man, were weak of heart and supported Man U for one reason and one reason only - the glory! I bet that almost none of them could point to Manchester on a map! I also bet that very few had ever been there! But, when you ask them their link to Manchester they'll give some stupid reason like "well, my next door neighbour's uncle's best mate's second cousin twice removed once flew over Manchester so I'm practically a baggy."

If Man Utd relied on all the fans to be from the actual Manchester area then they would be screwed with a capital S. Never met a Man U fan that actually comes from Manchester all the Mancs I have met support City. Still I expect they have fans in London and Birmingham now the Arab money has taken them over.

As I live near Manchester I do know plenty of Mancunian ManU supporters but as Manchester's Mayor said last year "Like two thirds of Manchester I support City". I think its also true that two thirds of all d#ckheads I've ever met were non-Mancunian ManU supporters, they seem like Blue bottles to a turd.

Sorry i thought i had explained that in thr 1st paragraph , i supported my local team Kildare County while the exsisted , sold tickets did flag days etc .. before they existed i use to support Shelbourne , had trial with them when i was younger , i wasnt good enough :angry: i watched Kilkenny City for 2 years as they were the closest at that time , Irish football might also have been better if all our best players stayed here aswell . irish support for english clubs generated pace when irish players started to play over there .. so as i said i do (not as much since family came along) support irish clubs & irish football in general i just happen to support Everton aswell .. when i was young & single (&fit) id go to a league of ireland game on a fri nite , train or have match with our youth teasm on sat , play a match on sunday.. i can unerstand your wonder of it totaly but i dont understand how you think we are all glory hunters , Everton, fulham , sunderland (although i do know Niall Quinn) Wolves etc overseas fans glory hunters how ?

The gulf in class will be massive but, if enough of the local population did support and follow Randalstown Athletic just think how good they'd be! Instead, you've chosen the weak heart's option and chosen to support a bigger, foreign club. Well done you! Just out of interest, why didn't you choose Barcelona? Or Real Madrid? Or Juventus? What was your reason for choosing Man U?

Your problem seems to be you are just jealous that your team wins nothing. You're correct again! Blimey, you're good at this! The Palace haven't won anything of note. However, when they do, I'll celebrate like a nutter! Why? Because I've followed the boys in red and blue all over this country at considerable expense. I've been there when Steve Claridge nailed one from 30 yards to break my heart in the 120th minute of the play off final. Because I've seen us lose countless semi finals against bigger clubs. BUT, when we beat the Man U's in their own back yard with a squad costing about forty grand there is no-one happier than me!

I've bought the Palace players drinks in Croydon - have you ever bought a current Man U player a drink?
I've played golf with Palace players - have you ever played golf with a current Man U player?
I've bumped into Palace players whilst out shopping - have you ever bumped into a current Man U player whilst out shopping?

You carry on supporting Man U but you know that every time you celebrate one of their victories that it's a hollow celebration. I promise you, you'd get much more satisfaction from a Randalstown Athletic victory if you followed them exclusively.

So what makes the PL the best league in Europe?? The supporters from all over the world and ploughing the money into their favourite teams.
And I have met many of the players and the manager and follow them all over the world. Also one of my best mates cousin played for them until last season. I have followed them since I was a kid.
You really are barking up the wrong tree if you are trying to convince me that it is wrong to support an English team. I will support whoever the hell I want. You go and support whoever you want and stop talking alot of rubbish because it isnt getting you anywhere

I lived in York for a while and if the Palace were not up that way I would go and see them. Saw them play Fulham in the 4th division. Fulham never broke sweat.

I support my local team, I was just lucky that they were winning European cups every 2 years when I was a kid.

Only joking. One thing I am proud of is that my family (women as well as men) have been supporting the reds since at least the 1920's and even when we were in the 2nd division in the 1950's. Believe it or not Liverpool was probably 70% blue up until the 1960's. It is probably at least 60% red now, and possibly even more. I'm just glad that both sides of my family have a red pedigree, whereas lots of others went red in the 60's/70's/80's.

This doesn't tie in with what most blues say, about most locals being blue, but it simply isn't true. Ok, if you said do more locals actually go the match to goodison than to Anfield, it may be true.

I've always wondered if this is the same with Manchester, a media/local myth that is no longer true, or not????

E.G. 1. Scouser goes down south in the 80's to find work, meets a local lass, stays there brings all his sons up to be reds/blues. Ok with that.

2. Scouse kid born in approx 1986 watches loads of new over hyped premiership football in new allseated stadia, live telly every week, sees man U winning all and sundry, and despite all his family being passionate reds, decides at the age of 7 to ask his dad for a man U top. Carries on supporting man U as also find a friend in school who also does. Never been to old trafford, as no-one to take him, but supports man U still. - traitor to his city!!! Might also be the neighbours lad.

I think if there is a familial link then ok, or if your dad supported them. Sadly most kids, support who are the top dogs at the age of 5/6/7 these days, buy a top and go from there. I was up in newcastle the weekend, played 5 a side on saturday morning, seen 1 man U top, 2 chelsea, 1 Liverpool (apart from our lads) and 3-4 barcodes.
A sad indictment of todays kids, who will support who they want.

As I said, I'm lucky we were top dogs then, but generally you should support either your local team or who your mum or dad tells you to.

When at the match, lots are local by me but also one from Birmingham, York etc. Do these season ticket holders not put more time/money/travel than me though. I'm home 20 odd mins after the match, some may be 4-5 hours (although Ive gone to about 300 plus away matches in over the years, so have also done my time).

The main thing is Passion that I judge them on whether from Dingle, or Dingle in ireland.
