Top Five European Ryder Cuppers

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

Can't believe anyone has gone for Clarke, bit of a sympathy vote I think.

The undisputed 5 are :-
Seve
Chema
Langer
Faldo
Monty.

Close misses on top 5 would be Jacklin,Garcia,Oosterhuis and Woosie.Woosie only missing out courtesy of his awful singles record.

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

My 5 were
Seve
Ollie
Faldo
Monty
Westwood

it was the US 5 that I found hardest to pick 5 from

I had
Jack
Arnie
Trevino
Watson
Stewart

Went for Monty, Faldo, Seve, Ollie and O'Connor senior.

O'Connor played in 10 Ryder Cups when it was a GB&I team which were never in with a real chance of winning and travelling to the states was difficult.

He was also on the infamous plane journey in 59 when the plane carrying the GB&I team from LA to the venue came clsoe to crashing, plane lost power and dropped uncontrolled from the sky.
I remember Peter Alliss mentioning this was the closest he came to dying.

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

didn't O'Connor hole the winning put one year at the belfrey ? I put Woosie in mine over Langer, just liked his attitude

Woosie was never even half the player Langer was/is! Not in a million years.

I agree 100% with freddie's picks thats what I also went for.

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

I don't see how so many people are missing Jacklin.

He was the guy who pretty much single handedly forced through the change from GB&I to a European team that could actually compete with the Yanks, and it was him that actually led us to the victories that turned the RC into a genuine competition.

Seve was the talent that gave Jacklin the ammunition, so he's in.

Faldo, definately.

Langer, yes.

You can have whoever you like for the 5th choice - except Woosie that is. For someone that was so cocky about his matchplay upbringing, his singles record was appaling.
