Anyone who has completed the GM Readers Survey will have answered the top five European Ryder Cup players question.

I think it could be an interesting debate to have here.

Fairly new to the game so my history of the Ryder Cup is not what it should be.

For me Monty has to be in the top five for obvious reasons.

I never saw Faldo play Ryder cup but as top points scorer I imagine he deserves a place, but has been captain tarnished some peoples opinions?

Sam Torrence as well, I know his reputation as captain but not sure of his playing record.

Does Darren Clark get in there or would that be sentimental?

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

Christy O'Connor was in every Ryder Cup between 1955 and 1973 (inc). He deserves a place in the top 5.

Is it a participation thing or are we talking about winning???

Freddie is pretty well spot on, Jacklin as captain..he's a major reason why it is so big today.

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

It easy

Faldo
Langer
Seve
Ollie
Monty

No one can seriously argue with that

I agree 100% Woosie can't be far behind and might have been up there is he could win a singles match.

Westwood/Clarke and Garcia all follow in my opinion.

He played 36 matches for 13 points - not good enough all the above beat him hands down

Different era, and also a GB&I side, with players who rarely got a chance to play in the States and only played in the Open. Unfair to compare against the players from the 80s and later.

I have just looked and didn't realise how good wesstwoods record was 29 matches 16.5 points - Woosie 31 matches 16.5 points - Jacklin 35 matches 17 points

I think Garcia if he hadn't had such a bad last Ryder cup would have been up there, his record is 24 matches for 16 points and I think he was 4 for 0 last time out

But thats what we do, we constantly compare Tiger and Jack they both played golf with what they had in the times they did it, so game on compare away.

You could argue he only played so many games because Europe wasn't involved

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

what about some of the older greats who had such a big impact on getting the event going (so not just purely in points terms) like Henry Cotton and Tony Jacklin?

Tony Jacklin is the hardest to leave out IMO giving that he helped revive the cup with his amazing captaincy and his 17 points puts him just outside the top 5 overall anyway, its just who would you take out.

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

Went for Faldo, Westwood, Seve, Olly and I think Clark

Faldo for his record

Seve/Olly for their pairing and Seve in particular for the way he raised his game for the RC

Westwood/Clark for the way their friendship seems to transcend all the fuss and it always looks as though they are two guys just playing a friendly game. Maybe a tad sentimental to have included Clakrk but Westwood is a fighter if not always a huge points scorer

Garcia

Was doing questionnairequickly at work and didn't see Olly on the list. Boss still caught me as well!!!! :o
I'm sure an alarm goes off in his office everytime i come on here

Time will proove Garcia to be the right choice as he has years left in him

Re: Top Five European Cuppers

Sorry to be dull but totally agree with Freddie. Sergio will get there soon.

It's easy to forget how great Langer was, I'll always remember the shot hit into the 18th at Muirfield Village in 1987 (partnering Lyle); Wadkins had put the pressure on and Bernhard stuck a seven-iron to 2inchs. Superb.

I went for

Faldo
Monty
Seve
Ollie
Darren Clarke

I was split for the 5th person but went for Clarke after his heroic performance in Ireland a couple of years ago
