I was watching the golf this morning and was really blown away by Tom Watson. 60 years old and showing them all (well, almost all) how to play. Knocking down the middle of the fairway, hitting the middle of the green and some lovely touches around the green too.

I was gobsmacked by how far he hits it too.

Par 3 - 188 yards - 6 iron
Par 4 approach - 222 yards - 3 iron

That's pretty impressive hitting by any standards but from a 60 year old. I'd like to get close to those distances now - never mind when I'm 60.

It was just such a pleasure to watch him play. Amazing stuff. Now, if only he could hole the short ones.....

Yep, the guy is a great player at any age and a role model professional to boot. He is comfortable with his game and plays like he has nothing to prove to all the young bucks around him, quite refreshing. Without doubt a gentleman of this great game.

That's a very good point and one that many of us could learn from when playing with a big hitter. He wasn't bothered in the least that he was 20, 30 or 40 yards behind his playing partners. He just played his own game.

He's my golfing god.

I went down to watch him win the Seniors Open at Muirfield a couple of years ago and was mighty impressed at his demeanor and the distance he still knocks it. Certainly much longer than anyone I play with. These boys have fast hands. He was wandering around afterwards, like your average joe, talking to fans and signing autographs without a fuss.

In all those years he's never put a foot wrong in my book. Nearly cried when he lost out at the Open last year.

Everyone else seemed to be perpetually frowning, looking really focussed and intense. He just seemed to be walking along without a care in the world. Clearly though, you don't play like he has without focus and concentration, but he made it look damn easy.

Really a joy to watch.

But he HASN'T got anything to prove, he's done it all. It's not like he's trying to secure his first victory or keep his tour card. :D

Great round though, some class shots in there... is he playing Ping Eye 2's? ;)

I guess the only testament to his age was when he was hitting a 3 iron into one of the par 4's and the young bucks were hitting 6 and 7's. Mind you he still nailed it and only just missed birdie

Peter Allis during the 2009 Open said he had the best swing he's seen and it was still the same after all these years.

It doesnt matter what club you get there with as long as you get there.Hes still pure quality to watch. Also we all see it week in week out youngsters driving 20-40 yrds further but getting the same score on the hole as the shorter hitting guy.

How do you think the 38 young pros below him feel tonight :D

Bet he's old enough to be the grandfather of some of them :p

Go on Tom, play well tomorrow and show them how it's done.

Did anyone see the clinic he gave in Dubai this week ? there was short section about it on the Sky coverage. He made the game sound so incredibly simple, he just oozes class

Agree with the above, also I've never seen him spit!
Unlike Dustin Johnson who spat on the 1st Tee today, even before he had taken his drive. :(

My wife saw Johnson do that and she was appalled. Good job she doesn't really watch it (I had jsut switched it over) and she hasn't seen Tiger and his penchant for dealing with excess spittle on a regular basis

Well, Tom Watson managed a very sound final round of -4 to end the event tied 8th with Henrik Stenson. Not bad going at all on a course just over 7300 yds. The young guns behind him this week should be taking serious note of how he plays the game and asking themselves "what do I need to do to match that". If they can't match that now, what chance when they are 60+ ?

Well done Tom Watson.

What is the US equivalent of a chav? That is what Johnston is. At least he didn't drink drive again yesterday too.

Or crash his car in mysterious circumstances or have affairs with numerous women.
