I'm just about to go out for a round and have decided to go out with a different approach. Today is all about the bogeys, as I'm going for a 90. The course is a par 70 and if I stick to my plan I "SHOULD" hit a 90 (which I haven't done in 4 rounds now).

My biggest problem has always been my driving as my high scores are always as a result of rescuing myself from a wayward drive, I'm even thinking of ditching it and sticking to my much more reliable 3 wood off the deck. So, I'm going to plan things as I go and work on leaving myself 2-3 putts for bogey depending on yardage. Anything better is a bonus

I'm going to use GolfPad premium (£3.95 on android) to help work out distances etc and it will publish my results so will let you all know how I get on.

You are thinking too much matey. Use driver on the wide open holes, less on the tighter holes. Play the percentages to your ability not bogey golf and you will do better.
If you tell yourself bogey golf is ok, chances are you will do worse, remember with any golfing ability at all, the odd par is achievable so dont settle for worse until you are in that position (ie knee deep in bamboo).

I suspect today's approach is a way for you to take the pressure off yourself which, for most of us is when those better scores just happen. Although course management is vital, some of my worst scores have been as a result of going out all guns blazing and spending the entire round scrambling and it has felt like a real battleground. Just play your game and enjoy it. By the way, hope you didn't get too many bogies today ;)

oh the optimism I started out with. 90? I started with a 51 on the front 9 then was playing better on the second when my phone decided to save the card and shut down as my battery had died. A shame as I had 2 pars on the second 9 up to that point. Long live the good old score card and pencil.

I had a cracking round with Golfboysatty and his brother, a good laugh as always and took plenty of positives. My driver behaved in the main and the misplaced shots were where I slipped back into the mindset of ripping the face off the ball, but managed to reign this back in and played some good golf.

I've left the course happy which hasn't happened in a long time so looking forward to the next round

I like the concept of the OP playing level 5's . Granted it didn't work out entirely to plan but it "should" take the pressure off and what you make up on the par threes and shorter par 4's you can give back on the long par 4's and the 5's. I'm not advocating playing uber defensive and if the chance is there to hit a par 5 or the 4's and the rewards outweight the risks (carry over water etc) then go for it.
