So, I travelled up to Callaways fitting centre at Chessington today to have a custom fit, and to see for the first time, the new XR irons that are to replace the X2 Hot irons in about 10 days time

I have been very happy with the X2's so there needed to be a reason to swap to the new clubs and I wasnt particularly worried about more distance although I'd never turn down an extra yard or two. I loved the look of the bog standard heads over the X2's and would happily play with them as they looked fine at address. So, I was soon on Trackman and hit 7 or 8 shots with my 7 iron for a base reading to compare the readings that would follow. As it turned out the stats were fine and showed that my odd poor shot was a pull left or odd push. My club head speed was (I think) 74 mph and carry average about 155 yards. A 7 iron was mocked up by Matt the fitter, with the Speed Step 90 shaft as it closely matched my 85's and the results were similar and we switched to the KBS shaft for a bit more weight.

He felt that they straightened out my shot a tad more and the poorer strikes still travelled well, he decided to add 1/2" to the length and I hit some good shots with them. Although I wasn't unduly worried about more distance I was looking for a reason to change and a tighter dispersion rate was one that might sway me. After some tweaking Matt was happy, and said that my dispersion was 5 yards tighter on average with the KBS shaft and 1/2" extra length. The claim that they go a club further is apparently based on the previous model to the X2's and there was no noticable improvement in distance on the well hit shots!

We looked at my hybrid (X2 Hot) and 3 wood ( Mizuno) and he admitted that nothing went any better than what I already have, and that the gapping was the best I could achieve. We then moved to the driver, I have an X2 Hot driver and couldn't find a setup that went better in the new range after hitting several balls and swapping shafts.

So the conclusion is that if I change, in theory, I could gain an average 5 yard dispersion. I have offers to buy my current clubs so I need to ponder the choices.

Sorry for the long post. Any views?

Or just re shaft what you have ?

The difference is negligible so I wouldn't say its worth it.......but who are you kidding, the X2's are halfway out the bag already BUY BUY BUY!

Doesn't sound like enough of a gain to justify the cost, to be honest. The extra half inch might add a few yards, but the same would be true if you added a butt plug (ooh, err, missus) to your current irons.

The half inch was partly to change the lie angle apparently

I wouldnt bother unless I wanted the clubs badly and they were beautiful, then the 5 yards wouldnt make a difference anyway unless it was 5 yards worse of course

could just get someone with a scuba to bend your current irons a tad more upright ... but then you'd miss out on the new 'cup face iron tech' ....
(mitchell make them for callaway so maybe your fitter forgot to mention that ...)

He didn't mention it

To be fair, the guys are right, it really wouldn't pay to change for the results shown on Trackman.

Nice write up mate, it wasn't a travel for nothing though, at least you know you have a very good set up in your bag already that is very suited to you.
And you seem to have met a decent fitter who said that what you have is what you need instead of trying to sell you stuff you don't need.
I'd stick with what you have for now and get practising!!

Doesn't seem to be enough to warrant a change in my view.
The only reason would be if you wanted to!

Is it a good setup there?
Might be tempted to get down there next time I change irons..

The set up is first class and, of course, Trackman is necessary as it takes all the doubts away. They do 90 minute slots which does go surprisingly quickly but you do have time to do all the bag (not putters or wedges)

I'd not buy new gear without seeing the figures!

Hi chris
i have the same clubs as you and like yourself I love them!
i can't see any club out there beating distance and forgiveness,or flight for me on the x2hot irons,so the way I see it,it would be down to looks and money.
if they look better to you and money no object I'd buy them! Can't beat the feeling of new toys no matter our ages:thup:

Good point to be fair!

So when do they arrive Chris???
:whistle::whistle::whistle:

I bought them back with me!
(Didn't really)

I have a decent offer for my current set and am trying to sella set of Titleist AP2's 710's so that would go a fair way to offset the new ones. I like the aesthetics of the new ones more and dispersion was tighter with the different shaft, but whether the price will be cheap enough whilst they are brand new out is possibly the key!

We'll see!
