Today's fitting at Callaway

I bought them back with me!
(Didn't really)

I have a decent offer for my current set and am trying to sella set of Titleist AP2's 710's so that would go a fair way to offset the new ones. I like the aesthetics of the new ones more and dispersion was tighter with the different shaft, but whether the price will be cheap enough whilst they are brand new out is possibly the key!

We'll see!

"We'll see" = done deal!

So essentially you're trying to justify paying x amount for a new bag of shiny irons which will not improve your game significantly. The rationale for purchase, if you're honest with yourself, is that you would enjoy owning them.

Nothing wrong with this reasoning. People spend a lot of money on DVDs, trainers, cigarettes, meals at Michelin star gastro pubs (£30 beef burgers) etc which hold little or no long term value. However, the enjoyment factor justified the outlay.

Forget trackman, buy what you'll enjoy.

So you telling me that there is very little if any appreciable difference between the current and previous ranges from golf manufacturers :eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:;)

Fair point. To be honest the only person you have to justify it to is yourself. Anyone else is either jealous as they did not concentrate hard enough in school and therefore life did not work out as expected so they can't afford to buy new clubs. Or they just like an argument for the sake of it.

Yes we all know it will make very little if any appreciable difference to your scores, but since when has that have to be the main buying criteria? After all, you can't take it with you.;)

I am not sure if I am missing something, or do not understand what is benefit is to handicap golfers, regarding the phrase " Better Dispersion " surly this more down to a repeatable swing, I can go to the range and hit 10 balls with an iron and find after about 3 or 4 the dispersion is really good, but on the course I have a once only opportunity to get it right so dispersion does not come into it?

steady on don't start putting doubts in his mind......... :D

Are the X2 Hots really as good as you guys that have them say?

I'm considering changing my irons, but hard to justify it as I think I'm better off spending on lessons to improve my swing rather than getting new clubs. However, my clubs are a few years old and weren't the latest technology when I bought them, so maybe there would be some difference? Or is it all just marketing guff?

If, on average, you hit the ball more accurately with one set than another, which is what dispersion is, then aren't you better off with the set that, on average, you hit straightest?

As most have said it comes down to if you have the money to and like the look of them then go for it.

If its going to be a stretch or a sacrifice somewhere else then maybe hold out one more year and see what they come up with next?

I read that 4 or 5 years for irons and 3 years for woods (although that may be the other way round) and you should notice a difference, even if it's just that a new 7 iron is the same loft as your old 5 iron. I suppose there's only one way of finding out, go and hit some on a launch monitor and see what gives. But as you say if you have a swing like an octopus playing the bagpipes then lessons may well be of better value in the long run.

I played today and scored 33 points, putting was the main reason for the poor score and I hit some really good iron shots and some mediocre ones too in conditions where the ball didn't run at all. I doubt the new clubs would have done better and I'm aware that the only reason to change would be to have nicer looking clubs. The 5 yard dispersion improvement is a consideration but not enough improvement to be a clincher. I intend to have a chat with my pro to see what his teakettle on it.

maybes the 'seed' has started to germinate some already ..... finding yourself looking back over XR iron reviews ......

I'm less likely to change than I was before the fitting but it may come down to the best deal I can eke out of my pro!

My pro got his demo irons today and I took a mocked up 7 iron to the range in the recommended setup ( minus the extra 1/2 inch) for a bash

I found the sound off the face quite different than the X2's, but I felt it stayed online better on the poorer strike that felt like a pull hook. It was very cold and extremely windy when I was there so a very difficult day to compare the two sets but distance was, as I expected, pretty much the same

I have sold a set of Titleist AP2 710 and have an offer for my X2's so a long way towards the replacement costs - so will have to make a final decision in the next day or so

So today I played a last 16 4bbb match. Our opponents were 3 and 4 handicap to my 12 and partners 10. I hit the driver poorly at times but my irons had heard about the possible switch and boy, did they behave!!

Our 4 par 3's, I was on in one on each, an A wedge, 6 iron, 7iron and 4 iron all gave me a birdie chances (none converted). We won 2 and 1 and into the 1/4 finals!

Still some thinking to do!
