I was recently given a dozen refinished pro v1's which are sold at sports direct.

I used them for the first time this week and have to say that despite being newish to golf they felt different to any pro v1 I have used before. After 8 holes the ball was rough to the touch very gray in colour and felt quite hard off the club face. Anyone else have experience of these balls?

No and wouldn't touch with a barge pole. There are sooo many good new balls out there to use and will have guaranteed performance and durability.

I would steer well clear of refinished balls. I used one this weekend as I had left mine at home... its was a prov 1 and after a few holes the writing had vanished and the cover was peeling off.

If you don't want to buy new then there are loads of Lake Balls to be found either from online shops or that well known online auction site. Go for a decent make at Pearl level. Much better than refinished, as you have found.

In winter I buy A grade, more likely to lose balls in winter due to leaves, low sun longer grass etc, but I treat myself to Pearl for the rest of the year. They do for me and it is less painful when you lose a ball.

Personally I steer clear of refinished or lake balls. Personal preference but I never find they play as consistently. To be honest there are a lot of good balls out there for budget golfers (AD333 would be first port of call) and you'll get a better quality ball

Needless to say I won't be using the other 11 balls, shame really. I can't beleive how bad they feel

I honestly thin refinished balls should be made illegal. They reprint balls and it's questionable use of a trademark. They then sell them as a cheap alternative to the real thing but still charge quiet a high price. There is no guarantee that you aren't getting a ball that been refinished again and the box can include a variety of different models of Pro V so no constancy.

A few quid more could get you a dozen brand new logo overruns or practice stamped ball. This is arguably the best way to purchase Pro V's at lower prices. Then there would be X-Outs followed by lake balls. At least with a lake ball you have all the poles markings etc so you know pretty much exactly what you have.
