Went out today to play at my local course by myself, all was going well, course was quiet, sun was trying to get out and i wasn't playing too bad.

I get to the back 9 and notice a 4 ball of older gentlemen infront so i slow down abit and do abit of practice putting but then a 2 ball is waiting behind me so i have to speed up a little and end up catching the 4 ball up on the 11th.

Now i'm not saying i have any right to play through them but i was stood waiting on every single shot for the next 5 holes and i'm talking a good 10 minute wait at times. I was even stood waiting on some of the tee's behind them while they were all teeing off.

The course was completley clear infront of them but they seemed intent on making me wait. The 2 ball behind me ended up walking in because i think they were sick of waiting so i spent a good 20mins chipping and putting on the 16th and still managed to catch them up on the 18th fairway.

So should i have said something to them or am i just being a moaning git? haha :)

I like to play on my own quite a bit, mainly after work or when none of my mates are around, so I sympathise.

Unfortunately, alot of golfers think that single golfers bear no right of way on the golf course, so unless you want to let them play through, you don't have to.

I don't hold this view, but I know people that do. It's pathetic IMHO.

Why didn't you say 'do you mind if I play through'?

Looking back i should have but i wasn't sure if it's the right thing to do. I always thought that if there is atleast a hole clear infront and your holding people up, either a single golfer or a 4 ball they should let you through.

They didn't even aknowledge me when i was stood on the tee behind so i guessed that they were intent on trying to ignore me and not let me through.

This may come as a surprise to the people who know me! :D

I was about 19years old at the time when I was out for a few holes one day, I got stuck behind a 4 ball of coffin dodgers who were so old and slow that they were actually playing off the ladies tees.

After about 1 hour 20 minutes for three holes I asked them on the 4th if I could play through to which I was told

"no you'll be old one day too son and you have no standing on the course"

After about 20 minutes I managed to play the 4th, I walked onto the 5th tee only to see the 4 coffin dodgers standing chatting just off the 5th tee.

I proceded to launch a ball right over their heads and walked through them much to their shock and dismay. Words were had and I just laughed at them! I was on the green when one of their balls rolled onto the front so since they couldn't see me I decided to pick it up and put it in the hole!

Poor old bugger probably told his grandkids all about "that" shot.

The old gits got the last laugh though as I got suspended for 4 weeks after being hauled up in front of the committee!

They should have let you through. A single has as much standing on the course as a 4-ball and seeing as they were holding you up they should have let you pass.

You could have asked though.

I was tempted to do something similar and wait till they were about the limit of my driving distance ( about 300 yards :)

This year has seen a decline in new/existing members at my club.
Alot of it is due to the OAP's thinking they are much superior than the rest and behaviour patterns like what 'thecraw' mentioned. Suppose they have paid more money into the club alot longer than we have.:p
And they keep booking up tee times in advance, and most of the time, they don't turn up.

'Unless otherwise determined by the committee' According to our current handbook a single player has no standing. We obviously don't want to encourage Johnny No-mates at our club. ;)

To be honest, whenever I play on my own, its never for a ful round anyway, and I wouldnt dream of trying to play through anyone at all.

I went out Sat pm for a few holes, and started on the 8th as its close to oir Practice ground, there were 3 ahead, and I followed them down 8 & 9, and then cut back across to 7 to keep out of the way, then played a few more but all the time keeping out of peoples way.

It really doesnt matter if you're on your own surely ?
Why let it wind you up ?

I'd have jumped to the next tee, finish my round and then report them to the club. Everywhere I play there are signs saying 'avoid slow play' so think this stands out. unless the commitee are also coffin dodgers they would understand

Have you noticed its always the old gits who whinge at you for breaches of etiquette but as soon as you point out something to them you are still in the wrong.
I always respect the old boys but i can not abide people who are so stuck up as to not let you through.
Why hold you up if there is no one in front of them - you could off teed off as a five ball - let them have a dodder and you could have sprinted through nice and quick - don't see what the issue is - I would report them !

I'm an old git, but not THAT old. :D

I really can't see a problem of not letting a single ball through. Just let them go and they're soon gone.

I played on Saturday in a 4 ball friendly and noticed that a 2 ball had caught us up after the 3rd and were waiting to play their 2nd shots on the 4th and 5th. So as we were walking off the 6th tee I said to one of them to play through on the next hole. The 6th is a par 3 so we marked our balls, called them up and by the time we'd putted out they were out of driving range on the 7th - everybody's happy.

As to not even acknowledge someone on the tee is just plain rude and a poor show. Put 'em down I say. :D

Golfmmad.

9 times out of 10 i play a full round though and i don't see why i should cut my round short becasue of other people being rude and ignorant.

I don't mind waiting but being stood for a good 10 mins waiting to hit every shot when the course is quiet is beyond a joke if you ask me.

I know i was only out for just a knock about by myself but i like to try and play at roughly the same pace all the time otherwise i think about shots too much and it affects my game.

I think you have to ask the question. Sometimes it is the only way to prick a conscience or two. If they kick off I'd try and be polite and explain that you wouldn't hold them up and it would make everyones round a little more enjoyable. If they really do moan I'd threaten to report them for slow play anyway
