Been playing off scratch at the Dunhill and stuffed Montie on the first day.

I know to turn pro he would need to be a few shots off his handicap but wondered if he could do it?

Now he has retired I dare say he plays a lot of golf, but doubt he is playing every day.

Would certainly be intersting to follow if he took that route.

I've a vauge recolection of a footballer trying the same a few years ago, before I was interested in golf, but can't remember his name so can't see how he did (or didn't as I guess is the case).

Remember that the amateurs are playing off the forward tees all four days, Spoff, whereas the pros are off the back. That's usually a 500 yards advantage per day so it's not a like for like comparison. Fair play to Tim though. Great scoring.

He could turn pro tomorrow if he wished, he would probably get some decent invites if he did.

There have been a couple of footballers who have tried their hand recently without any success, Julian Dicks and Roy Wegerley (sp). Also a Russian tennis player (I think) tried and promptly shot a couple of 90s in the inaugral Russian open!!

I didn't know that John, cheers.

Just had a google of Julian Dicks (how can a 'football-hard' man be called Julian - and he has a brother called Grantley  ) Anyway, the knee injury that stopped him playing football did the same with the golf.

I used to play alongside Grantley (he wasn't routinely called that funnily enough) for a couple of seasons. If you google him you'll see he was a decent semi pro left back too, had the worst disciplinary record in the country for a while!! Top man though :D

As Robobum has said Roy Wegerley is the one that sticks in my mind, but it's a different class to play professionally. The difference between scratch and professional is probably the same as between scratch and low teens.

At my last club, which was owned by Nigel Mansell. He played off scratch, and tried getting onto the seniors tour, but just wasn't quite good enough.

To turn pro and do well, he would need to score very well very consistently. Henman is scratch at Sunningdale, I think, so that is very respectable indeed, but he would probably need to be a lot lower and be able to take his game anywhere to have a serious go as a pro.

I heard he played every day at Sunningdale - dropped the kids off at school, drove to the course, met up with Sam Torrance et al, knocked it round Sunningdale, spot of lunch, back home.....happy days.

I believe Alice Cooper's ambition is to be good enough to play on the senior's tour when he hits 50 - witness his book, Alice Cooper, Golf Monster.
