For probably 12 years he was without question the finest player in the game and, whilst he was never my favourite player, he was compulsive viewing.
Nowadays I fear that he is about as relevant to the current game as Jack Nicklaus.
Time to give it up Tiger and leave us with the memories of you in your pomp; who wants to see Tiger just being one of the pack when he was previously so dominant.

Tiger's far from finished. If he takes the time to rehab properly this time and gets his game into a good position before he makes a comeback, then I definitely see him winning again. He's far too good to suddenly lose it all. It's in there. He just needs to stay healthy for a prolonged period and he'll be back. The Tiger haters might want this to be the end, but Tiger is a champion and an elite athlete that loves competition. I'd be very surprised if he failed to win again.

There has been no Tiger hating whatsoever on this thread, just people being realistic. Simple fact is he no longer intimidates opponents.
Sorry but I think you need to face the facts, his best days are behind him.

Interesting discussion with Alan Shipnuck of Sports Illustrated on the Irish Golf Weekly podcast. Shipnuck reports several people close to Tiger saying that his heart hasn't been in the game since before the scandal. Also that his ability to play any shot disappeared with Foley and his injuries when he switched to a 'trap fade' forced partly by the need to protect his back. The consensus of a lot of the people interviews is that the Tiger of 2000-2005 is gone any not coming back, although he could come back as a shorter hitting fairways and greens player.

I'm far from a Tiger hater, but this is 'hopeful' at best.
Tiger raised the bar and he was untouchable.
Now the likes of Rory, Speith, Day and various others have raised the bar again.
I don't think Tiger can now live with the 3 above. Nobody fears him anymore, his aura has diminished and it's showed in his previous pre-injury performances.

I hope he comes back and competes at a decent level.
If he enjoys what he's doing I don't see that it matters if he isn't as good as before, and he's earned the right to be there assuming all of his exemptions are still in place.

I'm not a Tiger hater, I loved watching him play at his very best.
IMO he's done and should retire immediately. He has nothing left to prove and to me he now has the air of an ageing boxer who keeps taking one more fight...

Why does he have to retire if he can't come back at the top of his game?

Rory, Spieth and Day aren't winning every week though. We've had Herman, Kaufman, Grillo, Knox and others winning tournaments this year, you're not telling me Tiger couldn't live with and beat them.
3 years ago Tiger won 2 WGC events in a year, won 3 other PGA events including the Players and had 2 Top 10's in the Majors. He was pretty untouchable that year. Last year when he was apparently done he managed a Top 20 in The Masters. Tiger can still play, he's still a world class player and if he gets fit there is absolutely no reason why he can't win again.
This discussion is essentially pointless though, as we don't know for sure and none of us can see into the future. Just don't be surprised if Tiger does come back and win again.

Dan, do you really think Tiger is interested in winning regular tour events? He has only one target and that is beating the Majors record. He hasn't won one since 2008(?) do you really think he can win another 4 to equal or 5 to beat the record?

I agree 100%, this would be best for Tiger in the now and long term.
... But he won't do it.
You only have to see how hard he goes after a ball to know he's of a different dynamic to the likes of Johnson and Furyk.
He's had numerous knee reconstructions and now his back is starting to fail and resulted in several surgeries. Turning the power down and valuing accuracy over yards would be the most sensible option, but it's not, and has never been, Tigers game.
Tiger of old could hit it anywhere and his short game and putting would bail him out. Over the last few seasons his putting certainly isn't what it was and his chipping was/is bordering on the yips!
If he does come back, he will struggle against the current, young, fit, injury free elite of the game.
