Tigers hitting drivers......

Dan, do you really think Tiger is interested in winning regular tour events? He has only one target and that is beating the Majors record. He hasn't won one since 2008(?) do you really think he can win another 4 to equal or 5 to beat the record?

I'm sure he's still interested in winning certain Tour events. The WGC events, Arnie's tournament, The Players, his own Tournament. I don't know, honestly. He has the game to though, just needs to keep himself healthy!

Well I think The Masters has a replacement for Arnie next year in the Honourary starters for 2017.

No prize for guessing who?

Given what he has achieved in the game I don't think it's past belief that he'll capable of more.

I think if you broke down each part of the game to

Driving
Long iron
Short iron
Approach
Short game
Putting
Mental Strength

When he was dominating he was the number one player at all those and he swept all before

But now he isn't anywhere near the top

He will play good rounds and will challenge for Tour titles if fit but I don't think he will be able to do it over 4 days of a major

If he could it would be great to see him challenging all the current top players but don't think he can touch the top ten right now - can see him struggling to get back into the top 50 for a while

All correct facts

My question would be if he could come back injury free could he possibly become a Zach Johnson type of player.

Fairways, greens and a very good putter

That is precisely the question that was discussed on the podcast I referenced above. Tiger was well behind the top hitters when he was last playing even well. He can't crush the course like he once did, and he can't hit a draw any more either, only a snap.

But more importantly, he has lost the drive.

Interesting discussion with Alan Shipnuck of Sports Illustrated on the Irish Golf Weekly podcast. Shipnuck reports several people close to Tiger saying that his heart hasn't been in the game since before the scandal. Also that his ability to play any shot disappeared with Foley and his injuries when he switched to a 'trap fade' forced partly by the need to protect his back. The consensus of a lot of the people interviews is that the Tiger of 2000-2005 is gone any not coming back, although he could come back as a shorter hitting fairways and greens player.

I would say since the birth of his children myself.

If he gets fit, then he can definitely win again.

For probably 12 years he was without question the finest player in the game and, whilst he was never my favourite player, he was compulsive viewing.

Nowadays I fear that he is about as relevant to the current game as Jack Nicklaus.

Time to give it up Tiger and leave us with the memories of you in your pomp; who wants to see Tiger just being one of the pack when he was previously so dominant.

Can't argue with that. No way that'll he'll win again on tour let alone another major. Time to slip quietly away and leave the fans to remember the great times. If you want to come back have a wait until the seniors

There has been no Tiger hating whatsoever on this thread, just people being realistic. Simple fact is he no longer intimidates opponents.

Sorry but I think you need to face the facts, his best days are behind him.

Finally, my game has something in common with Tiger's………

Can certainly see him winning on the PGA fit - he could still play a role on the tour but no longer the main role

I get what you're trying to say, so does that mean Big Phil should quit too as he hasn't won for a while too? Plus the rest that are over 40??

I'll go along with this.
He still has a good golfing brain.

I don't think so, not in the sense of if he had a bad hole or couple of bad holes he can put that behind him now, like he used to be able to do, now when things go wrong he starts to look beaten quite quickly, and it shows, hence why he doesn't have that aura any more, he'll obviously still have some great shots and capabilities in his locker, but I don't think he can put them together enough over a full round to compete now at the highest level in any majors with the strong fields out there which are getting stronger all the time!

Tiger has to battle injury and age. It's amazing how time flies. It's 8 years since he last won a major. In that field there were people like Scott Verplank, Tim Clark, Eric Axley, Rod Pampling, Cink, Weir, Sabbattini. All people you think are still around but have disappeared off the radar. Speith was 14, Rory was probably 17.
Everyone almost expects Tiger to come back because he was so good, so much better than anyone else and we saw him from an early age, so we almost think of him as young. He may surprise us and he probably will, but he has a mountain to climb.

Tiger's far from finished. If he takes the time to rehab properly this time and gets his game into a good position before he makes a comeback, then I definitely see him winning again. He's far too good to suddenly lose it all. It's in there. He just needs to stay healthy for a prolonged period and he'll be back. The Tiger haters might want this to be the end, but Tiger is a champion and an elite athlete that loves competition. I'd be very surprised if he failed to win again.

HEAR HEAR. He's the reason golf has such a high profile at the moment. People should remember that!

You can't say he will or won't come back at any decent level. But the last time he was mostly fit enough to play, the 2013 season, he had come back from surgery & injury and won 5 times.
So there is a precedence for him returning and managing to win.
I don't think any judgement on his last year or so is a sensible one as he was never anywhere near fit enough to play at his best.

So to me all that matters is that he gets fit enough to compete, and if he does that, then we can see if he's going to be good enough to compete.

No one disputes either his past greatness or his effect upon the game.

But neither of those will help him in his search for more Majors.

Players have, in the past, had great careers in their forties but they have usually either risen to that level at that time or retained the level.

In Tiger's case it would mean him returning to a level that he has not been at for some years now and that is, sadly, very unlikely.

I am being realistic, that does not make me a "Tiger hater".

Spot on. People are talking like it's been 10 years since Tiger was at his best. He won 5 times on Tour 3 years ago, and they were big events too. 2 WGC's and The Players. I just hope he takes the time to get healthy and get his game in shape before he returns this time, was obvious he wasn't ready last year, and yet still managed a Top 20 in The Masters.

2013 was a stellar year for Tiger (one of many he has had) but for a professional sportsman, particularly one whose career has already covered 20 years, three years is a massive period.

As for tied 17th at last year's Masters he was a long way from contending and look at some of those that finished ahead of him.

I hope he proves me wrong but head rather than heart says "it ain't gonna happen!"
