Forbes.com has reported that, by their estimate, Tiger Woods has surpassed the $1 billion mark in career earnings.

The Web site takes into account prize money, appearance fees, endorsements, bonuses and his golf course design business. They said, “If you add his $10.5 million in 2009 prize money, the FedEx bonus and his take so far this year from his more than $100 million in annual off-the-course earnings, Woods' career earnings are now 10 figures.”

Forbes says Woods is the first athlete to cross the billion-dollar mark in career earnings and that his only rivals are Michael Jordan, who may cross the barrier in “four or five years” and Formula One driver Michael Schumacher, whom they estimate has earned nearly $700 million since 1991.

Mindboggoling amount of money for doings something all of us pay to do

Money doesn't motivate Tiger he will not rest until he is widely regarded as the best golfer ever, he has to break big Jacks record to get that.I think he stopped carting about money 20 or 30 mill back.

I believe money is part of the package of all pro golfers motivations, after all it is an expensive carreer unless you are significantly successful at it. Once a golfer makes enough not to worry about money, then their motives will change and be directed or focussed more. Name a tour pro starting off who would turn down the chance of winning in a open, say 25 grand for just 15th place, against maybe, just maybe doing enough to get into a qualifier?

Money for some comming from wealthy backgrounds may not be a big motivator, but be assured it still motivates. If it doesnt matter to top golfers, how come purses are so high, how come they dont give up their purse to charity.. believe me it matters and to some degree it motivates, I have forgotten how many times I have heard golfers and commentators mention how many thousand that one putt cost a player, it matters.

In Woods case I disagree. He has more money than he'll ever spend and reports indicate that he does give a proportion of his income/winnings to several charitable organisations. He doesn't need the money in the same way someone trying to secure a card does and for him its winning that motivates him. No question that money doesn't come into it in my mind

I can see where you are comming from but Tiger does donate a considerable some to charities in his event in july he donates all his winnings to the american troops and the target world challenge in December he does the same.

But as you say the commentators are always going on about how much a missed cut has cost.

Point taken fellas but in my post I speak of the general motivations for all professional golfers and I would reitterate what I said, Once a golfer makes enough not to worry about money then their priorities and motives will change or re distribute focus. I dont think Tiger had difficulty from the onset of his carreer but nevertheless it would have been a motive amongst others to be what he is now.....the biggest earner in sport. The fact that he donates now, or that he doesnt need the cash now, is irrellevant to me. If big money wasn't in part a motivating factor in proffessional golf, then golf would just be a weekend gig and Tiger would leave a nice job at walmart just in time for tee off in the masters. They want the fame, they want the money that goes with it, they want the lifestyle it offers. However much a Pro may say they just want to be the best at something may be admirable, but if they were truthful, they would all play championship tiddliwinks for the right money, reputation and lifestyle.
Being the best may be the prime motivation, but if golf only earned you £200 for a win and a little brass trophy, crowd popularity and champion status after you had just Travelled 200 miles by train, simply would not be enough.
Of course money is a motivator, maybe not the main one with some, but you can be sure it is a motivator.

can I put my Mr Cynical head on? Taxbreak.
though many would still give (some), this doesn't hurt.

He also runs his Tigerwoods foundation.

That said, he earns what people are willing to pay him. It isn't exactly his fault he is rich beyond belief. He doesn't have to spend any of it on anyone but himself if he doesn't want to.

Wasn't he one of the original group of Yanks who wanted to be paid for attending the RC?

What a good point Murph, I think you are right.

Also the Tax break point is a great one Viscount

Jack played on for the love of the game and endeared himslef to the fans. He remembered that without fans they would not have the lifestyle they were acustomed to. Tiger is only playing on in order to become the winner of most majors and not because he still loves the game. His attitude stinks and his course demeanour is atrocious.

Its akin to Bobby Moore loosing his record number of caps for an outfield player (108) to David Beckham (114) as Moore played almost all if not every minute of the games he played in whereas Beckham has had 20-25 token caps.

The Beckham brand want the title just as Tigers PR people and sponsors are egging him on, its not for the love of the game thats for sure.
