THIS is how it's done......USA style

It makes perfect sense. There is nothing to be proud about in something as random as your place of birth. Be proud of something you've worked hard to achieve, not something that was pure happenstance.
I take pride in what my country has achieved which I have had a minuscule of input to

Expand your own theory. You are happy to own pride with an achievement, despite the correlation that that achievement or the opportunity to even have it is largely down to that place of birth. Why be proud of luck?

There’s no such thing as luck. It’s an expression we use to make sense of good or bad things that happen to us.

I didn’t choose to be born in the UK. I did choose to put effort into things I’ve achieved. You’re not comparing like for like.

Because you were born in a first world country you had opportunity to 'put in effort' and 'achieve'. I feel your view on this is way too simplistic. What you can try, let alone achieve is significantly dictated by your environment. Try achieving the same goals you are proud of if born in an impoverished country. Try achieving it if born with an inherited low IQ or mental disability. I could go on, but I suspect you get my point.

If you don't call this luck, what do you call it?

Personally if my parents took an interest in my health and education, if I was born in a place where education, basic infrastructure and health care was available, but to name a few advantages I consider myself lucky. One thing I agree with you, I have no choice where I was born, nor a choice in my parents and wider family circle - to me this is luck, be it good or bad.

I don't want to derail this thread too far, so tying this up. I cannot be anymore proud of my achievements that I can be of my place of birth or my parents. I have little to no say in any of them.

Best rendition I can recollect, of the star spangled banner, was by a member of the military ahead of the F1 GP a few years back...
Awe inspiring...
When non-famous people sing it it is about the song, when famous people do ti it is about 'look at me, I am so creative and great'.

Best I have seen in a non-quality way was Carl Lewis singing it at an NBA game. He must have lost a bet or something.

Best I have been at live was at the start of the Marine Corps Marathon.
