Think Ben Stokes catch was good? Try this one...

That's the Jeremy Jeffress reaction catch we were talking about on the other thread. Kevin Kiermaier's one on Monday for the Rays v Toronto or the one the Blye Jays' center fielder had on Wednesday were way better.

The cricket one. Here is Kiermaier's catch at the wall

Wow, have to admire that, but it was more of an instinctive reaction catch, compared to the athleticism and agility of the Stokes catch.

Both great catches, but different 👍

Edit, Kiermaier’s catch is well good , in the same vein as Stokes,

Great stuff

All good catches. But Ben Stokes didn’t have the advantage of a bloody great baseball glove on his hand. He actually had to catch the ball as well. In silly boys rounders all you have to do is stick your hand in the way and the glove does the rest.

Yeah right - try playing baseball one day and you might understand. They are both great sports with great athletes at the top of the profession.

It's a quality catch, but be it baseball or cricket,. I much prefer the catches at distance as opposed to instinctive ones caught by a bowler. My fave cricket one was Jonty Rhodes. Full stretch like Stokes, but a lot closer, so best of both worlds. As to the comparisons, they are obviously skilled, but there’s a reason a wicket keeper wears gloves, to deny it helps is naïve or biased imo.

How about this for an amateur?

I didn’t suggest they weren’t great athletes or that the catches weren’t impressive. I’m simply suggesting that it’s much easier to take a one handed catch if you’re wearing a massive catching glove than if you aren’t. Surely you can’t disagree with that?

That;s a fake. I was standing about 15 yards to the left of Evan Longoria whilst that was being filmed.

So at kids cricket training/nets I volunteered to keep.. the only mitts was a baseball one. I must say that trying to catch a ball with a reverse cup on my weak (left) side was probably the most difficult thing I have tried. Again it’s probably because my training/instincts is to catch a ball in my palm and facing forward .. in baseball I had to try and catch it in the web and (palm) facing backwards .. bloody difficult

Btw was listening to Aus v Afg on TMS while driving .. they were banging on about the Stokes catch

I was fortunate that I threw left-handed but I do everything else right handed. So having a mitt on my right hand almost felt natural from the start. It made handling relay throws from the outfield to home a lot easier.

Reaction catches are great because you get no time to freak out and panic. The best caught and bowled I ever took was when someone straight drove back at me. The rest is a blur as I collapsed and everyone thinks I’ve been hit but I took a really low, one handed catch that I couldn’t explain the mechanics of if I tried.

It’s like putting with a big hole

Sorry but he had a glove. Doesn’t compare to someone using their bare hands. Wicketkeepers take some stunning catches, but a lot are caught in the webbing between thumb and first finger. Jos Buttler takes some great catches with the gloves, but can’t catch a cold without them.
