In last weeks stableford, Homer and I were in the same group. Homer only scored 29 points but he was remarkable upbeat about the whole thing. I have to admit, he was hitting it quite well, not perfect but nothing too wild and a lot more solid then recent times (GM events excluded). The Homer I've come to know would have been beating himself up about the score but this Homer seemed to be able to filter the good from the bad and focus on the good.

Today we turned up for our 1st round winter league match against a couple we know quite well playing off 6 & 12. Once again, this Homer was striking the ball fairly solidly following Thursday's lesson and with me struggling to get to grips with the semi-frozen greens (apparently they are experimenting letting us play on them frozen) we found ourselves 2 down after 4 holes when we should have been level.

On the 5th tee a strange thing happened. I was being critical of myself for letting the last two holes slip away but this new positive Homer told me not to worry about it, we'll get it back and a par here would probably win the hole. A little perplexed I put the last two holes behind me and we went on to win the match 3&2 with both of us winning our fair share of holes and "new" Homer making lots of positive noises - in fact I don't think I heard a negative comment all day for the 2nd week in a row.

All this got me thinking, who is this new Homer and what has he done with the original?

Despite the new swing still being a long way from the correct or polished article and with only 50 range balls under my belt(thats usually just a warm up for me) last night to try it things went reasonably well. I hit a good opening drive and canned a 15 footer although we lost the hole to a par 3. Horror drive on 3 in the middle of a horrid squall and my usual half-arsed effort in full waterproofs. Lost ball but still upbeat. Another mess on 6 but my man was there.

I came in a few times including the 8th, 9th and 10th and hit the ball with a degree of confidence. Its hard in better ball as you can become reliant on thinking your partner will be alright and I was trying hard not to think too much about the swing changes and just focus on getting it round.

The two we beat are alway there or thereabouts in all pairs events and have won the knockout and so it was a great scalp. If he gets through with his man we play sundance and his partner next so we've not got an easy road to the final but we're enjoy the getting there before winning it.

I'm trying to take a pragmatic approach and realise I'm going to hit some crap shots and lose a few balls trying to make the changes but I'm already seing a better contact and some improvement. Of course I could go back to the miserable old git you all know so well if the shock is proving too much
