Their Snouts are Back in the Trough

When they decided their own pay we didn't like it. We wanted an independent review body.

Now they have an independent review body we dont like what they are saying.

Simples!

Is it actually indepedent though that is the question I heard being asked. They are all useless though, if they actually did a good job then I would not have much of an issue with this but they are all a bunch of muppets

I quite like my MP. I would disagree they are all Muppets but Ed Balls looks a bit like the 'Animal' that played the drums ;)

Yes it is.

My local MP who lost his seat at the last election was very good. I did not agree with his politics, but boy did he work hard. I'd be happy for them to get £100,000 grand a year as compensation for all the crap they have to deal with from their constituents. Yes some of it is valid and necessary, but boy can you imagine how much rubbish they get in today's society where everyone is looking to be offended/upset and complain.

Does anybody really think this will stop their expenses,!!!!!

No it will not stop their genuine expenses as they are entitled to them, much as just about everyone else is if you are using your own money to perform a task for an employer. But the proposal will cut down on the 'silly' expenses that rightly cause so much outrage with the public.

Good post, I agree with those sentiments. Many people today feel entitled to something for nothing but someone always has to pay. Also it seems good sport to blame everything onto MPs rather than admitting we all have a part to play in the fortunes of the Nation and rather than complaining get off our butts and try to do something ourselves.

I contacted my MP once when a property deal went wrong.

I ultimately received a beautifully hand written apologetic two page letter from the Attorney General which basically said that the English property law was rubbish and they should copy the Scottish example.

Quite impressed with the process and I felt that I had been listened to.
Anyone else had direct dealings with their MP or are they just sitting ducks for those who cant be @rsed.

That's rubbish. We have a far superior system down here when buying property that allows someone to change their mind/gazump/pull out or hold everyone else in the chain to ransom 10 minutes before the contracts are exchanged. Thus ensuring that a lot of time and money already spent to get to that point is wasted or lost. Yea, bet you're jealous now.

And before anyone else gets offended THIS IS AN ATTEMPT AT HUMOUR and it is not an English person having a go at the Scots. I repeat again, A JOKE! The English way of buying property is in fact rubbish and open to all sorts of abuse.

Maybe they should have a basic salary, and then "bonus" payments for each surgery they hold, and every time they attend a sitting in the House of Commons. The problem is that those who work damn hard get the same rewards as those who never put their heads above the parapet. Can't really compare them to GP's or headteachers, as they don't have to receive a 3-line whip in order to turn up!

He lost his seat though? Maybe he just happened to agree with your points of view, every MP I have had dealings with have been rubbish. People get paid an awful lot less for a great deal of hassle. Most of the MP's and governments could not run a bath

Confused. So most here think MPs are all rubbish, so why do only rubbish people become MPs when there are so many better candidates (like many people on the forum) that could do the job better. I assume they can do the job better if they consider the current incumbents rubbish and they have the knowledge and skill sets to do the job better.

Why dont more people on the Forum become MPs and attract the over generous salaries, expenses, pensions, lavish lifestyles and payoffs that go with the job?

Just interested why

Do you reckon the British government will ever get tired of you kissing their ass?

I don't think they're overpaid in comparison with footballers, bankers, council chief executives etc. They are running the country after all (badly or otherwise).
The timing is awful, and of course will be condemned in the press, whose editors will be earning more than the MPs.

Quite like my local MP and she seems to be a real party favourite. I've contacted her a few times via E Mail and have received a personal response both times. The response is usually typed on lovely paper and hand signed. I even had a follow up response to a question I asked regarding this countries status as a Libel Tourist destination. Maybe, in time, she'll become a little more jaded by the process and will fade back into the pack, but she's done enough to earn my vote again...

Comparing MPs to GPs is disingenuous. For a start, MPs are able to turn up when they want, get involved in what they want, have whatever side jobs they want and are unaccountable to anyone except at election time, when in most cases, the result is a foregone conclusion anyway.

Sarah Wollaston, former GP turned MP does not agree with the pay rise. She understands better than most the fact that GPs don't get paid what The Daily Mail says they do, that the demands on them are considerable and that in contrast MPs have a lot of hidden perks and expenses which offset their superficially modest pay.

Anyway, being an MP is really only an intern job for the post parliamentary career as a lobbyist/adviser/consultant to a company you have smoozed up to while an MP. Not to mention the peerage or knighthood given even to abject failures as MPs.

Most MPs are just pedarii who do what there told to and tow the party line, they require no more than average intelligence and no training. Ministers and those with positions of responsibility already get paid more for over seeing the ritual re-disorganisation of public services that follows every election -no performance related pay there.
