The Yips

Yes. I went through two years of it. It is possible to cure it, but it is hard work.

Note: the yips is not just missing putts left (or right).

Whenever the putter face touched the ball, an electric shock went through my hands, causing a massive twitch, shooting the ball off in any direction, and any length. Not good.

I changed my grip with the right hand, so the putter went no where near the palm, (effective turning my hand round through 90 degrees), so the back of my hand pointed up. This removed the 'trigger' point, and it started to go away. I then gradually moved it back, and although I get the odd twinge every now and then, it has mainly gone.

Wouldn't wish this on any one, it is worse than the shanks.

I asked this question because some 18 months ago after a long weekend away with our club society I got them.I tried everything; reverse grip,"two thumb" you name it.It is nothing to do with tension as putting at home on the carpet made no difference. I saw in the paper last week that scientists know what causes it but they can offer no cure.
I have cured it by putting left handed, originally with my dad's two sided brass putter ( he's 97 by the way ) and now with a two sided Scotty Cameron bought second hand for £60
If you go left handed you need to grip it as a natural leftie would as for some odd reason with a right handed grip the yip is still there.
I cheat a bit as I do putt right handed for long putts of 15+ feet but am increasing the distance gradually.
Worth a try?

Considered myselrf to be an ex-sufferer but always thought of it as a psychological or psychosomatic thing. Basically came to fear even the shortest putt - and so it just got scarier and scarier. The putter did seem to jump out of my hand as I made the 'stroke'. Eventually got out of it by putting wiith left hand or left hand down shaft.Recently read it is a physical afflicition - not that it makes much difference if there's no cure!

I've always been a terrible putter and it's not uncommon for me to have a lovely four putt (on the 1st on Sunday......... ;)) but I must say that my putting has become a lot better since I purchased an Odyssey two ball belly putter.

Putting my four stab well and truly behind me I then proceeded to sink some crucial 6 - 8 footers which I was very pleased with.

I also putted very well at Luton so my confidence is up at the moment.

I don't think I ever had 'the yips' but many people that I've played golf with have commented on my poor putting - in particular, my reluctance to hit the ball. That was before the all conquering Odyssey......... :D

Not had the putting yips but had a spell of dartitis where I'd aim for treble twenty and not be able to release the dart and end up hitting the skirting board. It is a horrid affliction. I'm not sure other than sheer guts and determination how you'll get through it but I hope its only temporary. It is much worse than the shanks
