The Tinkerman..

Make him an offer you can afford. 💶
At worst he will say “no”

If he’s letting people borrow it ,it can’t be his no 1 shaft.
He has tons of drivers lol, he's just ordered a new Ping as well. I think it would otherwise be sat in his car!

Yes just don’t offer a stupid amount.
These are real quality shafts and don’t come cheap.

Just ask him straight out.
“ Are you selling it if so how much”
He might surprise you if he’s got loads.

It’s rare to find your perfect shaft so don’t let it go without a fight 😂

I’ve always tinkered, especially with drivers and shafts.
In a quiet hour this morning I used the digital kitchen scales, tape measure and AI to check the swing weights of my usual set-ups.

These are the results:
1. TM Stealth 2 with stock shaft = C8
2. TM Stealth 2 with Tensei shaft = D0
3. Ping G400Max with stock shaft = D4.5
4. Ping G400Max with steel shaft = D9

AI assessed them as follows…
Your Driver Spectrum
You now have the full range of feels to choose from:
• The "Feather": C7.7 (330g total)
• The "Standard/Neutral": C9.7/D0 (330g total)
• The "Heavy Pro": D4.4 (330g total - G400 Max)
• The "Sledgehammer": D9.3 (390g total)

Which of these feels best when you actually pull the trigger? Most people find their "Goldilocks" zone is only about 2-3 swing weight points wide. Jumping from C7 to D9 is like switching sports!

😂😂😂

I’ve been mostly using #3 for the last couple of years with the odd few weeks on #4 when the swing was getting wild and it has worked well.
Because it was cold and wet yesterday and we had to carry I took #1 out. Predictably it was disastrous; like swinging a pencil.
I’ll be on #2 tomorrow, looking for a happy medium that doesn’t exhaust me.

I checked my usual iron set too. They were all over the place from C8 to D5 and not necessarily in the order you’d hope.

I've no idea what my swingweights are, or what any of it means.

If I Google the specs of the G430 SFT driver, it says the standard swingweight is C9, but with my Hzrdus shaft, it's "1 point higher than standard" - whatever that takes it to. C10? D0?

My 3 wood is apparently D0. 7 wood is D1.
My irons are supposed to be D2 and so is the matching 5 hybrid.

That all seems to be in order... maybe?

If I cut 1 inch off my driver shaft, but replace the 50 gram grip with a 25 gram grip, what happens to the D0 swing weight?

Well the pencil grip worked an absolute treat today. I used it anywhere on the green too, just went back to normal grip if I was putting from off the green. I holed a 12 footer for par on the 4th, a left-to-right breaking 6 footer for birdie on the 6th, a 15+ footer to save par on the 13th as well - plus zero three-putts which is very rare for me on my course. Total of 28 putts for the round which is outrageously low for me (granted I chipped it stone dead with hybrid on about three occasions though). Very pleased! One knock-on effect that I think helped was that I spent a little bit longer making sure my alignment was correct with just my left hand on the club before I added my right hand. Not had this as part of my routine before, but I think it really helped as I kept hitting my lines. Only had one bad putt all day, on the 9th, when I didn't quite feel comfortable and bludgeoned in well long and right of the hole - but the more I use it the more comfortable it will feel.

3 wood was pretty good at 15° as well. Still fairly high in flight from the tee, definitely noticed it going a fraction longer, and even found the front edge of the green with my second shot on the 4th when I wasn't sure I could reach.

7 wood was ok, miscued a couple of shots with it, but it is a new club that takes some getting used to.

Overall the tinkering was positive so far.
Further update on current tinkerage. 😄

On the weekend, our greens had grown up a bit with the Friday rain and improved temperatures, so they were as slow as they've ever been, which made the pencil grip a real struggle. That is really the only downside I can see, it can be hard to give it some welly when you need to. I stuck with it though, as one of the problems I had with normal grip was getting too right-wristy when trying to add speed... but it was frustrating, I had at least three putts bang on line stopping 4 inches short. At least I am still hitting the lines with it. The face feels so square, and normally when the greens aren't deathly slow, I actually find pace control is better as it forces me to lengthen the stroke rather than just whack it harder with the wrists getting involved. Did some practice last night, it's still a little fiddly figuring out how far round the grip I want my fingers to go and things like that - just need to hit enough putts that it starts to feel comfortable and I stop thinking about that stuff, then hopefully by the time the greens speed up, I'll be happy with it.

The 3 wood is back at 16° now. 15° was good off the tee, but off the deck, I don't know, I just feel a little more confident with that 1 degree of extra loft sitting behind the ball. 7 wood is getting better every time, I'm now used to the fact that it has a consistent fade shape and doesn't occasionally draw randomly like the old 7W.

My latest bit of tinkering is changing the driver from 9° to 9.5°. All the way back in my fitting, he did fit me to it in 9°, but I recall him saying "you might end up playing it at 9.5" so I guess there wasn't loads in it between the two. I think when I'm driving well, the 9° is fine because I launch it well when I strike it near the middle. The issue comes when I hit a few low on the face and was only getting 11-12° launch angle. And viewing a recent Crossfield vid where he keeps saying amateurs aren't using enough loft gave me food for thought. So it's 9.5° for now, just gives me a little bit more help on those low strikes. And again, just a little bit more confidence behind the ball maybe. Sometimes with 9° I felt like I really had to close the face to ensure I didn't slice it, but in fact my most frequent bad shot became a left pull as a result.

Last one is chipping, although more technique-based than actual tinkering. Got a bit of practice in and decided I was gripping down too much - I tended to go almost down the bottom of the grip, but I feel like I'm better off just halfway down the grip so I can stand up a bit taller. Obviously with the mud around chipping is a crap-shoot anyway, but we'll see.

I'm also thinking of changing my driver loft. having had multiple sim sessions over the winter i've deffo gotten faster and changed my angle of attack numbers vastly in the 5 years since i got fitted. i think my heads a 10.5 plus its cranked up a degree or 2. I can always change it back as well.

the 7 wood itch is getting to me as well but god damn they're expensive with a stiff shaft.

I got mine from here in the end: https://www.snaintongolf.co.uk/ping-g430-max-golf-fairway-wood
Managed to find a 10% code in my inbox so it cost me £215.

Be sure to check your email for old codes they may have sent you - I found one from my birthday last September that said it would only work for 7 days - they were wrong, it still worked. 😄

Last one I had was 2023 they removed me from mailing list for not opening them 😂
