The Tennis Thread

I'm not a great tennis fan, but can enjoy it. That said I'm afraid that I can't be bothered with the whole 'Wimbletwaddle' thing - all the rather pretentious hoop-la of the event, and the somewhat overly self-awareness of the spectators.

But as my Mrs will moan at me for being a curmudgeon when I mention such things and tell me to either shut up or go away, I'll just get on with watching a few matches (or games) with her...so yes I watched a little bit of the Alcaraz, Boulter and Radacanu matches yesterday...good stuff. And most likely will watch some of Draper today. And I like John McEnroe's commentary and opining.

Mcenroe and Andrew cotter are brilliant to listen to. So good at what can’t be an easy job to do right

In the Draper match v Cilic,
Cilic must be the Keegan Bradley of tennis! He bounces the ball sometimes as many as 15 times with a couple of annoying pauses.
Must be frustrating to play against.

Not really much of a tennis fan anymore but I've watched a handful of matches at Wimbledon this year on TV. Women's tennis is as good as the men's is tedious.

Was great watch but the powers that be really need to sort out the screeching. Emma’s opponent was practically screaming her head off every shot, maybe sounded worse as the roof was closed but it is very annoying.
There is very little they can do

It’s not as bad as when the likes of Sharapova and Seles

There are plenty of things they can do. There are penalties for smashing rackets, bad language, hitting balls at ball boys/girls so fairly easy to punish if they deem the noise to be unsportsmanlike.

It’s been happening for 30 years- for some it’s just a natural reaction of the effort they are putting in

They aren’t going to penalise someone for grunting

I think it was worse!
Having seen Sharapova on no 1 court you could hear her outside the stadium

I don't think it is, if it was, wouldn't they all do it?
I also read somewhere that they don't often do it during practice.
It should be clamped down upon, as it spoils it for spectators who ultimately pay their wages.

Every one is different , players have made noises when they hit the ball for decades

It didn’t stop the likes of Sharapova playing to full courts

And how do you stop someone from making a noise when they hit the ball if that’s how they have been playing for years

Can they make a noise to a certain level ? Or must it be in total silence

The likes of Connors and McInroe grunted even Murray , Nadal .

As long as it doesn’t impede on your opponents swing then what else can be done

There's a big difference between a low grunt and a high pitched shriek.
It sounds like she's being stabbed with a pointy thing every time she hits the ball!
It's totally unnecesarry otherwise they'd all be doing it.
It wasn't a thing back in the day and I'm sure they were trying just as hard.

They hit the ball a lot harder now than back in the day as well

Players play differently, last year they had a segment on it from a very coaches and sports therapist and for many it’s part of their make up when hitting the ball and they have been doing it for so long it just happens naturally , its the same as the constant bouncing for some or Nadals little quirks

Looking at articles it first started in the 50’s

Players aren’t robots - just because one grunts doesn’t mean they all do and vice versa

It's probably coached into them from a very early age.

They do hit the ball a lot harder these days, no doubt, but they are much fitter and use far superior equipment but, and this is a big but, back in the day they were still giving it 100% ..................... without the need to screech.
Or should I say SCREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEECH.

Yet people back in the 60’s were grunting ,

“The late 1960s and early 1970s saw the emergence of players like Vicky Palmer, nicknamed "The Grunter,"

Research has explored the potential impact of grunting on performance. Some studies suggest that grunting can slightly increase hitting velocity”

So what is it that tennis can do to stop someone making a noise when they hit the ball ?

If it’s not affecting the opponent then it doesn’t really matter - people have a choice on if they want to watch that person

And if the player is making a noise that does affect the opponent then rules are already in place

It’s been there for decades and some of the best players in the world now and over those last decades have grunted etc
