Justice Secretary Chris Grayling said the Attorney General was considering seeking a longer sentence.
He called it a "repugnant crime", adding: "I think most of the public will feel justice hasn't been done."
He said: "In a case where [the Attorney General] judges the sentence to be too lenient he can go back to the courts and seek a longer sentence. He may chose to do this in that case."

That sentence is far too leniet - should be a minimum 10 years for taking someones life

Yes it is black and white but punishments arent strong enough - there is nothing to scare people.
yes there will be some circumstances where a generic sentence doesnt apply but if someones actions means someone else has lost their life then i believe the punishment should be harsh and reflect the fact someones life has been lost

Hard to see where the consistency is with the justice system at times.
A lad from the year above me at school went down for murder last week, and must serve at least 18 years. He was drink/drugged up and stabbed one of his mates. Have no strong feelings either way with regards his individual case, but the difference between both sentences given that both scenarios had the same outcome (someone died), it's hard to fathom the four year sentence above when compared with the life sentence for the lad from school.

Slightly off topic, but do you think the DM are reflecting the siege mentality of their readership, or hoping to profit from creating division, which is slightly more sinister?
There seems no doubt they were reluctant to specify the 'provacation' as it doesn't fit their agenda.

I agree, especially if the provocation is racial, and you are of that race. All this doesn't excuse hitting someone in the street, but it explains why it happened

You might be misinterpreting what therod posted from the paper.
I interpreted it as the victim saying it to the attacker - so provocation. Could be wrong though.
It's why there's a court where both sides can be heard and a judgement made! We are really just speculating!

Whatever was said that punch was a real haymaker and designed to create maximum harm, he moved in to make a second hit if the first had not worked, I would guess that he has martial art skills. None of them had the common decency to check if the victim was injured. Now if he had made a small push at the guy in a 'Clear off' motion and the guy had stumbled and hit his head then I could accept it was manslaughter, but not in this case.

Just watch it on local news , in fact I drove past the spot coming home tonight , the guy on the bike did not do anything , the other guy did but too just walk away like they did and not even check if the guy is ok is just not on , that area is a very busy spot till very late in the day , in fact its almost 24 hours , its not as if they wont be seen . its all down to respect , this country is lacking in respect to others and its all down to parents and education plus the fact the law is too soft on law breakers and they get more rights then us that obey the law , 4 years he got and the other guy got life , a life time dead .............how can that be right , no way .............

The question was asked re what the provocation mentioned by the judge was. The provocation was a racial insult. Was that provocation for most on here... I guess not, but it was obviously provocation for the convicted.
Interestingly, the local MP has taken this up as this is the 4th one punch killing in Bournemouth in the last 13 years & this seems to be the longest sentence.
How does that fit with being lenient?? just asking !
