The range - bad for your game?

Not sure if the reason for not liking the range should be 'fatting your shots'.

If you are striking the ball cleanly then the mat is not relevant.

When the mats are good the range is fine but my local has very poor mats. May as well get some cheap carpet, lay it on the road and use that instead.

The range definitely has it's place. I use the local one quite a lot as I've been trying to grove some fundamental swing changes with the irons. The key is not to grove the wrong things, which can easily be done if you don't go with a plan.

The next project is to rediscover my driver swing which seems to have gone AWOL again

Love the range, would go every day if it was possible.

Hitting off a flat lie with perfect conditions is a great place to start working on a swing, even better if you have a camcorder, ten times better if you have trackman too (I wish!).

my range has mats and an outdoor grass section. i always try to hit of the grass when possible. also a alot easier to go and get your short game balls again to save u £££

My range has just replaced the mats and got new balls. I quote like going to the range as i am in my first full seson and am still ingraining my swing. Also one day last week i decided to just work on my long irons at the range which helped me a lot for Sunday's game. I will also go on the putting green and do a little bit of chipping first though.

Does anyone else just go to the range for fun? I love going, making up games to play and just having fun. Its not work, it has no worry of lost balls or bad scores, it can just be a lot of easy cheap fun!

I am a member of my range and the price of balls makes it easy to go and just smash away drivers, punch mid irons, hit targets and pitch into nets. I just love experimenting with what I can do rather than work on swing improvements. Its more fun to try and fade a 3 iron onto a green 150 yards away!

You cannot do those things on a course or at the practice area easily.

i get bored as a goat down the range. It was ok over winter when i was learning a new swing but other than that i lack motivation to go

Funny you should say you get bored as a goat.
I saw Billy the goat up the range last week chipping and putting,
he seemed to be having a right laugh.
In fact id go to say he was acting like a right kid.

With me having lesson and trying to develope a decent swing, the range 2 or 3 times a weeks is invaluable, while I agree having a perfect lie every time bears no resemblance to course conditions, not being a member at any club means to practice I have to go to the range. Plus the way I slice the ball the range is by far a much much cheaper option :)

I went the range before to work on my irons as played today and wasn't the best tbh. My driving and 3 iron play was spot on when on the course and irons I was just topping them. Anyway off to the range I go 8,7,5 and 3 iron and everyone I hit just went to the right wasn't good, wouldn't have minded but the 3 iron I was hitting well before and it's been like that the last few times so the range isn't for me.
