The Open 2028

I have never played it but a few years ago I was in the area and so just walked in, it's in a residential area. Walked up to the first tee, just stood and took it all in. Oddly enough, it did not look much but clearly it must be. I'll be interested to see a tournament there, fill in the missing gaps in what I saw. Nice to see a course that has not been used for a while.

Big fan of Lytham as an Open venue been some real good ones there over the years and course I’d like to have a crack at. Will always remember how so close Woosie was to winning there it really suited his game if it wasn’t for that cock up with to many clubs what could have been!!

yeah seen a drone picture of course in it's entirity looked tiny struggle to see how it will have enough space for the crowds/hospitality etc

I was seconded to Warton for my last two years of work. We had a company flat in Lytham. The company had a Corporate Account at Royal Lytham - despite trying very hard , I never managed to get a round. ☹️

Pleased to see Lytham getting it back. It looks hemmed in, but there's more space than you think.

Great course to play too.

Wot he said, “there’s more space than you think.” I’ve played it a few times, the last time being on the media day on the Monday after the Open. Off the blacks with the fairways in it’s a beast. Like many Open courses knowing the course is essential, especially the closing holes.

An early highlight from the last visit was seeing Mr Mizuno putting two balls into the greenhouse off the first tee.

Another memory from 40-ish years ago. Standing next to Jack Nichlaus in the gents. He’s a big lad… ;)we didn’t shake hands… :ROFLMAO:

IMO the bunkering on the course is superb , placed perfectly to pick up the errand drives placing emphasis on accuracy

Not sure I fully understand why Muirfield isn’t selected these days?

BBC… “has pointed to infrastructure challenges around practice facilities, while the long-term staging of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club - next door to Muirfield - creates further complications.”

Unsure how an event being hosted on an entirely separate piece of land creates complications? In fact, I’d argue it would probably reduce complications?

I suspect it will get one again soon - Same with Carnoustie

I think they use muirfield for parking during the Scottish Open. Would it also not conflict in terms of advertising in the locality? All of the boards up and around the area are for the Scottish Open in the run up to it.

I get your point, lots of crossover advantages but they clearly don't see it that way.

You have to imagine it’ll be back at Royal St George’s in 2029? It’ll have only hosted 1 in the previous 17 years by then, which was a Covid impacted event! 2011 being the one prior to that.

May be blasphemous… Am I the only one who is ever so slightly uninspired by the Open rota these days? Feels like it could do with a couple more options to replace the ones they elect not to use. Controversial subject no doubt… 🧐

It would be good to add in somewhere like Royal Porthcawl , Portmarnock etc

But it is limited to which courses can host

The spectator numbers they’re targeting (300k?!) would overwhelm some of our larger coastal towns, to be fair, let alone some of the small ones home to top courses.

If logistics were no object, you’d imagine Porthcawl, Royal County Down, Dornoch and Deal would all get the nod.

For starters, they could stop giving it to St Andrew's every 5 years. That would free up slots for other courses. It isn't interesting enough to warrant going back there so often.
