The Open 2028

The spectator numbers they’re targeting (300k?!) would overwhelm some of our larger coastal towns, to be fair, let alone some of the small ones home to top courses.

If logistics were no object, you’d imagine Porthcawl, Royal County Down, Dornoch and Deal would all get the nod.

Yeah definitely same with places like St Enodoc

Haven't yet had the chance to play Cinque Ports, but played Royal St George's in November and discussed the Open with my caddie. Another (old boy!) caddie mentioned that although the course at RCP could be made longer than RSG, the plot of land RSG is on is almost 4x that of RCP providing space for hospitality etc.

IMO - I enjoy Cinque ports more but no chance that it can put up stands etc

I agree with this. I love Cinque Ports as a course and challenge, prefer the way it plays and is laid out compared to RSG. But accessing the course from an Open venue point of view RSG has it for me.

That being said final qualifying at RCP is always a good free day out 🤙

I was seconded to Warton for my last two years of work. We had a company flat in Lytham. The company had a Corporate Account at Royal Lytham - despite trying very hard , I never managed to get a round. ☹️
I used to live in Warton.....but my interest in golf didnt develop until many years later.

For starters, they could stop giving it to St Andrew's every 5 years. That would free up slots for other courses. It isn't interesting enough to warrant going back there so often.

The issue is the pro’s want to be there

For many winning The Open at St Andrews the Home of golf is the ultimate , top of the tree

It’s mecca for golf

Not sure I fully understand why Muirfield isn’t selected these days?

BBC… “has pointed to infrastructure challenges around practice facilities, while the long-term staging of the Genesis Scottish Open at The Renaissance Club - next door to Muirfield - creates further complications.”

Unsure how an event being hosted on an entirely separate piece of land creates complications? In fact, I’d argue it would probably reduce complications?
Not the best for folk living around here.
Scottish Open really needs to move. Getting dull watching it at the same venue every year. Renaissance is nice but not Augusta.

AIG Women's Open being played there this year (test event after so long?)- got my accommodation booked and looking forward to it. Never been - never mind played it - looking forward to walking the course.

You have to imagine it’ll be back at Royal St George’s in 2029? It’ll have only hosted 1 in the previous 17 years by then, which was a Covid impacted event! 2011 being the one prior to that.

2026 Birkdale
2027 St Andrews
2028 Lytham
2029 will be a Scottish venue - Carnoustie I would guess as it last hosted in 2018.
2030 probably St Georges
2031 could be the return of Muirfield
2032 St Andrews

I guess Muirfield has to pay a few more years pennance before it can return to the rota. Maybe a few token women members isn't enough. I don't know, maybe they need to demonstrate a commitment to inclusion of non-binary people too?

I don't believe Muirfiled has any more infrastructure challenges than other venues. Like RSG it is a large plot of land with plenty of space.

Turnberry gets the Open back in about 10 years, post Donald.

V pleased to see RLSA getting it again…I think I will go and watch it. I reckon it’ll be good for viewing tbh

I played RLSA in perfect conditions, and I played horrendously….and I still loved the course 🤣🤪

I would like Carnoustie / Turnberry to get it in 2029

I actually don’t think there should be any more courses added to the Open Rota…we have enough

I agree about Muirfield, no infrastructure issues there. They hold the Scottish Open at the course next door so they've had plenty of practice, plenty of space. Clearly still on the naughty step
